I'm planning on moving on out to 400yds and realize the way i shooting i'm going to need a bigger target stand than my 18 inch wide one. At quantico, where i shoot, you have to hump your stand out there and back durng breaks so it has to be something i can quickly and easily setup and take down.

I've been doing a search but can't seem to find any plans that completely fit the bill.  I could, of course, with appropriate experimentation build something but the thought of iterations of going prone when the range goes hot only to see my target go down 400 yds away doesn't appeal to me.  Does anyone have a link to plans for something like this?

TIA

Curt - I have plans for building a wood stand 20" wide (uses one 2x4 for the base and two 1x2's for the struds).

While wood is a bit heavier there are advantages.  It doesn't shatter (especially when its colt).  The weight helps it from tipping over - especially when the wind is blowing.  If you do nick the stand you end up with some biodegradable wood splinters on the ground - not chunks of white plastic that are sure to upset the owners of the range.  Besides wood 1x2s stand up much better to direct hits (see agin the 'shatter').

BTW the single 2x4 base isn't heavy and its easy to make it wider (up to 4" wider w/o using any more wood).  Shoot me an e-mail if you're interested.

I made mine without plans and have been using it for about three years. I use one of those collapsible chair bags(you find at wally world)to haul it in. They really are simple to make. I just made this up for ya....

The neateest part is after you clip your target to the top clips, you slide the bottom bar up clip it to the bottom of the target and the weight holds the target firmly in place.
Oh and if you hit htte frame, its CHEAP to fix!

Thanks guys.  Cape hunter that is what i had in mind.  If i'm reading your plans right you basically glued up the bottom and left the other pieces unglued for disassembly, right?

Forrest thanks but i think i need something a little lighter than wood for this effort. I agreee wood has definite advantages, i just don't want to be carrying it a 1/4 mile over berms and such.

Correct. It will break down small enough to fit in a camp chair bag you can sling over your shoulder. THe bottom is only sealed to keep the sand in.

No problem - just offering an alternative.

That is a neat design for a PVC target stand though.
