I really seem to have a problem getting the correct size of patches. It doesn't matter if it's rifle or handgun, I sometimes feel I make them too big and end up having to use too much pressure to move them through. This might seem harmless, but it's in these instances that I have to push so hard that I snage the brass front of my rod on my muzzle (when cleaning revolvers) or end up rubbing against the side of the barrel, cylinder etc. How much should it take to push the patch through. I use about an 1.5" X 1.5" square for about everything from 9mm to .45. Smaller calibers, I use around 1X1 (sometimes smaller). And I don't have anything larger. Is this too big? Just to give you an idea. I usually have to get the patch started with a couple wacks with my palm on the rod end, then it slides through the bore with very solid hand pressure. I guess it's really just the jerk at the beginning when the rod starts, and the jerk as it "pops" out of the end that really makes me feel bad when I either snag or rub the rod, or ram the jag into "face" of my revolver. Any tips? Gundraw P.S. My pistol rod is a Tipton Carbon Fiber/Brass rod. Will this alleviate many of the concerns of problems if the rod snags the muzzle or rubs against the bore? |

Buy some pre cut patches for the size you need. I use Kleen Bore patches and yes some times they are very tight but some firm taps with the palm of your hand will get them through. Make sure you center the patch and that will help too. The carbon fiber and brass jag will not harm the barrel steel at all. Use an old sock rolled up or some paper towels folded over many times to prevent the jag/rod from slamming into the revolver face. It works well for this and stops any damage. |

See I'm in the same boat. It seems like if I cut patches to the "designated" size, sometimes they are virtually impossible to get down the bore. So I'm just trying to get a feel for how much pressure I should be looking for so I can cut them as needed. I cut all my patches too. I got a bulk pack of cotton patches from sportsman's guide and I'm still widdling away at those. Gundraw |

I've found that with the correct jag size for my bore, cotton patches tend to be VERY snug, sometimes too much. I use the very thin Hoppes brand that Walmart carries and double them over. They seem to go in snug, but I don't have to force the rod. Pushing too hard is definately BAD. It tends to ram the jag into the throat and then the crown, which is the very last place you want to bang over and over again. |

I usually tape a piece of plastic to the face of the revolver when cleaning. It is very easy to hit it with the brush. You should get a plastic patch puller and not use a jag. I use the one that came with my Glock. 1.5" X 1.5" is too big.. You just need enough to cover the jag. I don't see how the brass will touch anything when you aligned it in the middle. |

I usually use a pull thru like an otis or mil surplus. With that I use .30 patches with my AR, I just don't center the patch in the holder. I set the patch in the loop so I can just pull it thru the bore. I can get 3 uses out of each patch and get big bags of them at the funshow. BSW |
