I tried running patches through my barrel for the first time tonight. I have a Kleen Bore cleaning kit as well as a tipton pierce point jag. I could run the loop jag through the barrel, but i couldnt get the pierce point through. It would get stuck right at the barrel by the breech. I am using 1-1/8in patches as well as a dewey guide. Any suggestions?

Have no problems with 1 1/8" patch, Dewey rod, Sinclair rod guide, and Tipton jag. It gets a little snug when I mistakenly try and run two patches through at once.

the only thing i can see being wrong is the jag is out of spec or the barrel is out of spec. How do you fold your patches over your jag?

Nothing special, except to try and stab the patch near middle

+1

Stab the patch right through the center. You might have to trim the patch a bit too. Patch fit can vary from jag to jag. Also, if you run a completely dry patch through the barrel you’ll run into problems sometimes.

Good advice here.  Put plenty of lube/cleaner on the first patch and it shold run fairly easilly.

thats the problem, alwas stick the jag about a 1/16 "  away from the edge center in the middle.

later

That's what I do, slightly off center.

I cannot get a patch into my bbl with a pierce-type jag if I hit it in the middle... what I have to do is pierce a corner, lay the patch down on the jag, and wrap the "wing" corners around the jag.

Check to be sure the skirt of the patch does not extend so far back on the jag that it goes beyond the relief area behind the head and overlaps the wider part where the jag attaches to the rod.  The patch stretches and the skirt gets longer when it enters the bore.

Some patches are just too thick.  I have had good luck with the flannel ones Brownells sells.  Not such good luck with the heavy duty twill patches.
