Can't save it.  It will be destroyed when removed.  See the previous referenced article in the DIY forum for removal, and adding a perm-attach barrel.   Or just send it to ADCO who can remove and perm attach another of your choice.  The price is right and you know they'll do it right.  http://www.adcofirearms.com/shopservices/shop_.cfm?code=25  (scroll down for perm attach, and removal services)

I've got a post-ban upper for a bushmaster that I'd like to add a standard birdcage flashhider to. Do they have to dissassemble the upper to thread the barrel and add this birdcage or can they do it with the upper complete?

the upper can stay complete. you just have to cut off the current muzzle device.

Threading a barrel will most likely require disassembly.  Ask them directly for details/recommendations.

I was told this by one person, then Stag Rep replied on another post that they are welds.

Ditto on ADCO, they removed a permanent muzzle device and rethreaded it for me, can't tell it was ever on there

i had called stag. the pin that makes the muzzle brake permanently attached is pressed. Not welded or threaded but PRESSED. im going to drill out the pin, remove the barrel send it to ADCO along with my new fsc556 brake. Going to have the barrel shortened to 14" and also have the fsc permanently attached.
