Is it possible for an AR smith to remove a permanent hider and then attach the adapter for a suppressor?  I ask because I can't decide if I want my next AR to be a 16" barrel mid-length or 14.5" with permanent hider.

Uhhhhhh, really?  I thought it was PERMANENT?  WILL REMOVING IT DESTROY THE MUZZLE?

um, i guess it'd be best to say that if it can be attached, it can be removed; NOTHING is permenant

a good smith can remove most perm (esp all factory ones) muzzle devices (pinned, welded, etc) w/ no damage to the muzzle

heck, if you read the "how-tos", you could do it yourself...if you think you can

to save some time, trouble, and money, you could just opt for the 16" bbl and configure/re-configure your muzzle device how you want down the road

Yes, you are right.  I want a suppressor because of watching all of the damn videos on YouTube.

No I'm lying.

WTF - why ask the question if you're not going to belive the answer.

I've got a M4 barrel that is on it's 3rd 'Permanent' muzzle device.

It's permanent in the sense that you can't just unscrew the muzzle device for whatever reason with a wrench after it's been pinned & welded to make the barrel shorter. You need a smith to remove it for you if you don't know what you're doing.

i just removed a permanent "pin/welded" FH from a 14.5" M4A1 barrel...

i used a dremel cutting wheel to cut both the top and bottom of the hider in half being careful not to make contact with the muzzle or threads...

then i took a dremel grinding wheel and grind down where the weld is as far down as possible... you should start seeing the outline of the pin...

then take a nice size chisel and split the FH in half.. it should loosen enough that the pin falls out and you can loosen it off by hand...

i can take pictures of my left over phantom if you want... it looks like a cartoon when a shotgun barrel blows up...
