Has anyone used silver solder to attach a F/S? The instructions over at http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/howtoattachamuzzlebrake.msnw says to use pre-mixed silver solder/flux. Will it work just as well to use silver wire and flux? (Already have some) Also if I use mapp gas, do I need a mapp/oxygen mixture or just mapp? Also, how bad does this heating wreck the finish? Is it easy to touch up???? |

I have NOT done it - but have seen examples done by others. WHAT exactly are you putting on WHAT.? If your rifle is legal with a flash suppressor - you can just thread it on. IF you are putting a brake/comp on a POSTBAN RIFLE - you can thread and blind pin it - As I understand the solder process , you gotta be REAL careful not to overheat the barrel , and you WILL have to refinish the immediate area near the attached device. |

I've attached a phantom flashider to a 14.5" bushmasher M-4 barrel using silver solder and mapp gas. Looks pretty good, don't see where the heat damaged the finish, in any case my muzzles tend to discoler as they are fired. I think you can order the barrel from bushmaster with a flashider permentently attached and finished for $30 more. Probably the easiest course if you don't already have the solder & mapp torch. |
| It is a 14.5" M4 threaded barrel that needs to 16". I am waiting till september to determine whether it will be a KKF brake or Phantom FS that gets silver soldered on. I like the idea of soldering it on so that it could be taken off some day, folding front site?, Float tube?, Whatever. |

Just Mapp gas, degrease, work on a good amount of solder, clean all excess solder (unless you want drips of silver on the muzzle) time the flashider or brake and then get the device and barrel cherry red. I've found the type of solder to be more crucial. The jewelers silver solder that comes in a syringe thingee (1100+) seems to work better then the stuff I got in a jar from brownells (and cheaper). Quoted: nvcdl Did you use just mapp, or mapp/oxygen? I don't want to put in any more heat than needed. |
