I am considering purchasing a 14.5" Noveske with a "permanently pinned flashhider".  How permanent is that really?  In other words, if I wanted to replace it later on down the road, would it be an issue for a gunsmith etc. to remove it?

You would definitely need a gunsmith to change it.  I've had ADCO do it for me with no problem.

"Permanently Pinned" usually means that a hole is drilled through the flash hider and into the barrel, but not all the way through the barrel. A pin is then inserted into the hole and welded over, pinning the flash hider to the barrel. The weld is ground smooth and the barrel/flash hider are finished/coated/etc.

To remove one that is pinned this way you have to locate the pin. Sometimes a close inspection can reveal its location. If you can find it, you then drill it out, being very careful not to go too deep and perforate the barrel. Once it is drilled out you can take the flash hider off with a wrench.

I would suggest picking a flash hider that you like if you are thinking of permanantly attaching a flash hider. Also, be aware that once the flash hider is one the front sight base will not slide off the end of the barrel. You have to cut the front sight base off it you want to remove it. And then you can not install one that slips over the end of the barrel and pins in place, you would have to use a front sight base that is two piece and bolts together. Unless you drill out the pin on the flash hider and remove it, of course. Just something to keep in mind if you may want to change the front sight base/gas block or go to a full float or railed handguard that requires the removal and reinstallation of the front sight base to install.

I have a 14.5" M4 barrel with a permanantly attached Phantom. I use a YHM two piece flip up front sight base/gas block. I installed a free float four rail on my upper, but used the Midwest Industries two piece rail, it does not require the removal of the front sight base to install. Although that would not have been a problem with my bolt together two piece front sight.

beantamug, thanks for the write up.  I did a quick search on "Pinned" because I had a few questions on the 14.5" w/ a perm FH and the removal of rails.  You answered all my questions.

THX!
