| Have any of you put on one of yankee hills Phantom 5C2 Comp/Flash Hiders? I was curious how they worked and looked. I like the more pointed version but am not sure about what it will look like since it will be closed off because of the brake portion. If it looks odd or doesnt work well i may just go with the flashider only one if i decide to have it put on. Anyway if you have any pictures or have seen one i would like to hear your take on it. Thanks |
| I got one in for a review. It looks like a well made (well machined) piece of gear. The only difference between the one I have mounted and the one I received is the closed bottom. I really can't say how it performs yet though. I have to get a 16" bbl to mount it on. Stay tuned. |

This topic ties in nicely with my own situation. I have a Bushy M4gery uper with a pinned-on Vortex suppressor. While I've read it hides flash extremely well, I am concerned about the reported "blossoming" of this model (yes, it's the old style), as well as the propensity of the tip to snag on brush and other stuff. Finally, I've come to the conclusion that I prefer the A2-style suppressor after all. So, along comes the Phantom, which is A2-stylish enough, eliminates the snag issue, AND I've read it's just as good at eliminating flash as the Vortex is. My problem is that my Vortex is PINNED on to a 14.5-inch barrel. Anyone know the technical challenges inherent in getting that off and getting either a traditional (well, slightly longer) A2-style or Phantom suppressor on? Is the Phantom that much better than the traditional birdcage? Thanks! ETA: Well now I'm feeling pretty confused. I just took a closer look at the pics above and noted the A2-style profile of the new Phantom. What gives? Anyone know the story here? |
To answer your first question, the trad. A2 F.H. was rated in the 75-80% flash suppression range I believe. IIRC, the original 4 slot Phantom was rated at something like 93-95%. For your second question, the new generations came about with BM sowing up an exclusive for a 5 slot Phantom (probably designed for the 14.5" barrels though that's just a guess.) YHM then produced two more 5 slot variants with 6 o'clock enclosed for prone shooting to reduce dust & dirt kickup. The slot's or 'flutes' are very aggressively cut & the 6 o'clock section is quite narrow at approx. 70 degrees so they should still do an amazing job. |

Thanks! However, I was refering to the forward edge profile. In earlier models it is cut with notches, while the newer version is copmletely flat perpendicular to the path of the bullet. ETA: Do you think that the 1.5-inch A2-Style suppressor offered by KKF would perform in a comperable manner to the new Phantom? Like I said, I've got a pinned-on Vortex now, so my decision has to include the installation services. Does Bushmaster do it? Any ideas how much $$$ and time? |

I've got the new Phantom with no prongs on my rifle right now. I had tried ordering the new FS with the prongs just for the extra oomph in the looks department but paul called me and said they did not have any at the time (2-3 months ago) so I went with the flat front phantom. Paul installed it and it looks very very nice. I have not fired it yet with this new FS but I can't wait until I do. the finish is excellent and the slots are machined very nicely. I believe that you could seriously slice up your fingers if you fiddle around inside the FS. AFAIK, the prongs on the fronts of the previous phantoms were for wire cutting. I had seen one version where the author of the article stated that they cut wire fences very well. you would push your FS against the wire you wanted to get rid of and the prongs would hold the wire centered where a bullet could slice right through it when you pull the trigger. i can't see myself ever needing to do that. as far as the prongs catching on brush, i think that any brush that would or could get itself into those prongs would be sliced up very quickly. the edges are very straight and sharp. |
Makes for some nasty muzzle punches, too...or so they say. |
STUPID is right. The AWB is setting... I'm not sure if the new one works better or not compared to the old one or the Vortex. The Vortex always looked like plastic to me even though it is suppose to supress 99% of the flash. I had read too many posts and stories about copies of the Vortex that weren't worth the 10 cents of steel they were carved from. Supposedly, real Vertex FSs cancelled 99% and Phantoms cancelled out 93-95% like someone had already mentioned. For the small difference, I opted to go with the Phantom. getting rid of 90% of the muzzle flash is an extremely big deal. I consider 93-95% to be around the point of diminishing returns. I sure hope this performs as well as the older ones did. I suppose they could work the same or just as well, but probably not since they aren't acting on all 360 degrees of the fireball. The benefit of negating dust or dirt kick-up will make up for any loss of flash supressing IMO. |

I just got the new Phantoms with the closed bottoms in yesterday and will be adding them to the website today. 5C2's. $$34.95 shipped. If ya want one shiipped right away you can paypal me at '[email protected]' Denny |
The KKF A3 milspec does not reduce the flash better then a old sytle Phantom. I am wondering if the new 5 slot will do better then the old 4 slot. Should have one by next week.

You'll have one sooner than that. Oh, and if you decide you want to try a 5C2 instead just say the word. |
Zaphod, you'll have to forgive me but I'm still not understanding what you're asking in the 1st part of the above? It's been a long day and too much time in front of the computer has me a bit bug eyed. ![]() As for the 2nd part, you should call BM and confirm their installation process and then inquire if they will switch the f. hider out. If they won't change it out, I would then take the info you have on their installation procedure and talk to your local gunsmith. With KKF's backlog the delay may be too long, I wanted an HBAR turned down and was going to get him to do it but can't wait as long as would be required. |
