From what I understand, both are excellent flash hiders.  At the same time, the phantom helps remove dust signature when firing, where the vortex does not.  Given this, seems to me the Phantom 5c2 is a better choice.  Any thoughts?

This (since you're worried about kicking up dust).

Personally, though:  Vortex (superior flash suppression performance) > 5C1 (no goofy teeth like on the 5C2) > 5C2

i thought the teeth were for close quarter stuff, kind of like a bayonet on the end of the barrel.  i like the teeth personally, but if the 5C1 gives a greater gain in actual flash hiding, then i would really reconsider.  honestly, unless you are in law enforcement/military how often are you going to be gouging people with the end of your rifle?

i guess if there's an intruder in your house you could go for one of those really cool hollywood kills, run up, stab into the chest and blow their heart out or something...

I thought the 5c2 and 5c1 had the same flash hiding abilities.

For clarification, I called YHM and was told the 5c1 and 5c2 have the same flash hiding and dust signature reduction.

Is the YHM Phantom 5C2 when pinned long enough to make a 15.5 NFA compliant?

Yes.
When pinned and used with a crush washer, it will make a 14.5" bbl good to go.

then by all means i would go with the 5C2.  like i said, i like the teeth, and even if you never use them as a weapon, they are there should you have to.

If anybody cares, the "teeth" are also known as 'crennelations'.
