Does any one know where I can view a pic of a USGI 5.5" flash hider (not the moderator). I want to see how they differ from the civilian models available. (Or the did the Military ever have a 5.5" flash hider, is this just something that cropped up for the aftermarket sales industry).

Thanks

Just my $.02, but I don't see what use any military army could find for a 5.5" flash hider...I think it is merely a product of the desire to have a shorter barrel and the appearance of a silencer. Using such a flash hider, which, if I understand correctly, produces the same flash reduction as a smaller flash hider, would defeat the entire purpose of having a shorter barrel in the first place. I believe there would be no 5.5" flash hiders if not for the current US minimum barrel law.

Agreed.  I think they came about as a way for people to have a military style barrel but still have the 16 inch length.  I think the moderator was more like 3 or 4 inches in length.

What really convinced me is the look of them-they aren't a flash hider all the way down, as you can see in pictures. They are basically a flash hider welded to a 5" tube of metal.
