I am looking into getting another upper for Boar here in Ca. I am thinking something rather light I can scope and keep it tight at 100 yds. My first buid recently has a .204 24 inch heavy barell and is mostly good for sitting and sniping the critters. It's way front heavy and to balance it out would add that much more weight. I would like something as light as I can get it without loosing accuracy.

Do I realy need a heavy barell- beings I'm not creating much heat? It's just a piggy here or there.

What's a good calliber? 6.5 Grendel looks cool but I imagine expensive. It's got to knock em down, these pigs are tough.

Thanks in advance for your humble opinions...

Hbar is a complete waste of time for hunting. Go as light as you can as you'll be packing it a lot and shooting a little. My personal choice for big boars would be a 16" .458 SOCOM. Big, heavy and plenty of knockdown power. I look at the Grendel as more of an Antelope round... 600+ yards across the prairie, not 25 yards in the jungle.

.50 Beowulf is a popular hog gun around here. Can you have those in CA?

+1 on going light and going big bore. Small bores will kill pigs but the bigger bores do it more emphatically. And carrying unnecessary weight to get those few shots gets real old, real fast.

.50 and .458 are overkill IMHO.  I'd say there'd be nothing wrong with a 6.8spc, 7.62 or a .308.  All of which would keep ammo costs low assuming you're going to shoot it more than a couple times a year and only at boars.

+1 however on going light
