I'm going to open myself up for abuse here but I won a Larue FF Quad rail and could not wait to get it installed. I used what tools I had at the time and muscled it together. Afterwards of course I noticed that the bolt carrier did not travel as smoothly as before. I am fairly positive I pinched the upper, but I have fired the gun several times since. I thought about taking a Dremel and removing some of the surface area on the bolt carrier to reduce the drag. What is a impatient first timer to do? If I do Dremel the BC what kind of problems am I in for?

holy crap...dont f*** with the bolt carrier. Just get a new reciever and chalk this up to being a tard. You can get a stripped receiver for $86 from dennys. Or find a good used one for less on the EE.

Are you sure you 'pinched' the upper, or is the gas tube simply out of alignment (that will also cause binding issues)?

Years ago before I got tools to keep at the house I pinched one a bit. What I did (and Im sure Ill get flamed) is grabed a hammer and brass drift and straightened out the rec. Mine was bent below the ejec port and wasnt all that bad to fix. Ive got several thousand rounds thru it with no problems at all. As mentioned Id check gas tube alignment first though.

How does one "Pinch" an upper?
I ran a search on the term and only this thread comes up.
Is it caused by forcing the upper and lower together by forcing the latch pin through?

The only way I can think is if someone puts the upper IN a vice w/o a receiver block.

Thats exactly what I did.

Chalk it up as a lesson learned.  Time to invest in the tools.

Whats your health worth?  Firearms can be real ugly when things go wrong, and its your face  sticking next to your jacked up upper.  The odds of anything happening are very small, but so are the odds of the lottery, or of having an airplane hit your house, and it doesn't change that it happens each year to people.

Call it a learning experience, get a new upper.

New upper is alot cheaper than cosmetic surgery  Chalk it up to a lesson learned, buy a new upper and the tools to put it on, or it might be cheaper in the long run to send it to a gunsmith to have it replaced if you don't want to buy the tools.  Either way, a stripped upper won't cost much to replace.

you can also pinch it using the bushmaster action block with no support in the bolt/carrier area.

ive done two before realizing what was happening.

Hmm...
I've been using the Bushie block (no prob yet), should I pick up an insert,
or can I just use the carrier with no bolt in it?

i had one hell of an upper to take apart once and had to really crank down on the vise. other than that the bm works really well. what i like to do now is leave the bare carrier in the upper. works like a charm every single time.

My suggestion for vise "blocks" is the DPMS Panther Claw.  I use it exclusively for both AR15 and AR10 builds and work and have never had any kind of problem or damage occur, even on some uppers that the GI nut almost welded itself to.  It has inside support so the stress is spread evenly, not just on the lugs.  The one that PRI makes is nice for cleaning and scope mounting etc. but I wouldn't try to barrel an upper with one.  They make cleaning a breeze though
