Well, I almost trashed my barrel tonight!!  It was locked in a padded vice and I was trying to unscrew the comp.  Well, after 30 minutes of no movement, I realize this think is attached permanently.  So. . .How do I get it off?  Is it pinned so I can drill it?  The only mark is this oval shaped smudge.  Could that be a heat mark from some welding process?  If so, I guess hacksaw is my only choice, right?  I hate to go prehistoric on my first AR build!

you can grind down on the "mark" until you get to the pin. once the pin is removed you can remove the FS.

Better check with Armalite if the serial # range is a "pinned" or "knurled" on brake.

Have the barrel turned on a lathe and material removed around the thread housing until the pin weld / channel is open and pin can be removed, then unscrew.

Can't I just drill into the pin with progressively/ larger bits until the drilling has consumed the pin and then unscrew the comp

If you can find the pin, that might work, but if you drill too far your barrel is ruined. If you do it that way, try to find a bit that is slightly larger than the pin, and drill real slow, and try to turn it off w/ a wrench, drill a tiny bit more, repeat, etc.

I used a dremel and cut off wheel and split the brake in two.

Splitting it soulds like a good idea.

Since I'm shortening the barrel several inches, I'm going to use a hacksaw!
