I just purchased a AR from someone from a state that doesn't allow collapsable stocks. The AR has a Magpul CTR commericial stock, but it has been "pinned". Does anyone have any experience on how to remove this? The original owner said he took it to his gunsmith to have done and it only took him about ten minutes to do and was totally reversable. I'm just a noob here in a gun loving state that needs some help. BakerzDuzin Will post pics today! |

I'm in NY so I never had to unpin a collapsible stock, because it's illegal here. but I have thought about repositioning mine, and repining it, as it's out too far, just haven't done it yet. looking at mine, it is drilled and pinned only through one side so you can't just punch it out. You might have to drill a hole on the opposite side of each pin so you could then Punch it out through. Just make sure you don't drill in the wrong place on the opposite side of each pin. You might also have to unglue the stock from the buffer tube after removing the pin(s) as some of them are glued and pined. You'll know this if it still doesn't move after removing the pins. It's my guess that after you get it unglued you would have to get the glue out of the inside of the stock tube, and outer surface of the buffer tube or it won't slide in and out for you. Hope this helps |
Well if it's from a ban-state, and the 'smith did what he was supposed to do, it shouldn't be easily undone. That's the whole point of pinning it. So it can't be easily adjusted, per certain states' laws.
I dunno, I mean, how much is the CTR running right now, $90ish, right? To me that's a decent chunk of change just to scrap. Is it actually in a position that is not working for you? If so, I'd sell it on the EE (I'll bet it will sell pretty quickly to people in NY, and other states with telescoping stocks bans), and buy yourself a new one. |

Thanks for the advice...I think I'm going to list it up this next week. I'm just going to get the same thing, but it will save me the hassle of having to modify it and help someone that needs one modified. Do you know all the states that have the stock ban? NY, NJ...etc? Just trying to figure out what I'm going to put for the listing. BakzerzDuzin |
I know NY does. I think Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Thought I'm not 100% sure. Either way, I'd just use the same thread title for this thread, for the ad; "Pinned Magpul CTR". It will catch all the ban states attention, trust me. Like I said, I don't think you'll have a hard time getting rid of it. |

Any suggestions besides Magpul stocks for my replacement. This is my 1st AR, and am kinda new to this whole deal. BTW this is what the current setup looks like with the pinned stock. Stocks are one of the most user specific items you can attach to an AR so only you can determine what's the best replacement for you. Buy a few & see which one(s) you prefer the most. I'm partial to the LMT SOPMOD. I sold my Vltor E-mod & Magpul CTR. The SOPMOD is just that good but is very very expensive. |
Well if you like the CTR, but don't want to spend as much on it, check out the Magpul MOE stock. It's a twin to the CTR, minus the "friction lock" (which is a moot point, as the MOE locks up tight like prom night, anyway) and QD sling swivels. But it's almost half the price. AIM has it, and with $.01 shipping, it's a deal. Click here |
You'll need a new tube, that's it. The stock itself is pinned to the tube, so it can't move. Obviously, you can keep the spring and buffer, for your replacement stock. |
Where can you buy just the tube? |
See my post above: It's a twin to the CTR, minus the "friction lock" (which is a moot point, as the MOE locks up tight like prom night, anyway) and QD sling swivels.

+1. I must have missed the post saying that the rifle isn't even in possession yet. Who knows, you might even like where it is pinned, and can work with it. By the looks of it, it's pinned in the same spot where my MOE is pinned, and it works great for me. Not that this means anything for you, necessarily. Just sayin |
