Hello all,
I have heard some people say that pinning a vortex FH on a 14.5" barrel is a bad idea because the the vortex will eventually go poof and blossom. Anybody have any thought, opinions, experience??? Thanks

That will not happen in a million years.  Unless you plug it up some how or you do some thing else wrong.  I would take it to a smith and have him silver weld it, looks better than the pin and wont come off.  This method will not hurt your chrome lining even though there are people out there who claim it will.  Ive had this done to many rifles and in my opinion is the best way.  Good luck

The reason people say it is a bad idea is because the Vortex FHs are incredibly hard.  Their hardening process is excellent (in my opinion).  This makes drilling a hole into it more difficult than doing the same thing on a regular A2 or Phantom FH.

So buy the Vortex on the EE with the pre-drilled hole and be done with it!

Precisely, Smith Enterprises has it covered. Scroll down to the SEI Vortex FE's and there it is... ***HERE***

I got 3 M4s like that not seen any problems.

Yes there was a bad batch a few years ago that had the problem, and of course the knock-offs may have the problem.  But a real-deal current production Vortex will not be a problem.

In your opinion guys, which suppresses flash better - the Phantom or the Vortex?

They're basically the same, the Vortex may be slightly more effective.

I have had two Vortex flash hiders blossom and seen about a dozen more do the same thing.

The last one I had blossom I purchased in early 2005 from Brownells. It survived about 700 rounds on a 20" .223 barrel on one of my Remington 700s. I sent it to Ron Smith and he sent me another one no questions asked early this year.

They are a good flash hider being slightly better than the Phantom but there is no way I would trust one enough to pin it on.
