im considering adding a piston kit into my budget for my build
i have a couple questions about them though
with a piston kit, (and the proper BCG) would i be able to shoot steel case ammo?
correct me if im wrong but the determining factor is the timing right?
in theory, having an adjustable piston set up would allow me to shoot the crappiest of ammo to the best right?

id really like to hear from some people with first hand experience
thanks guys

I have a couple Adams kits.  One kit had a few failure to feeds w/ Wolf when it was new (bolt wasn't coming back far enough to strip the next round on the mag).  After about 50 rounds, I've had no trouble with it functioning properly.  The other kit has been 100% from round 1 using Wolf.  I broke both kits in with a few hundred rounds of Wolf, and use about anything in them now.

Awesome thanks for the info
the adams kit replaces the BCG as well correct?
will the gas block fit on a standard m4 profile barrel?

just to give you all an idea of what my end game goal is
i basically want to build/buy a gun that can chew through steel case ammo
i dont have the cash to fork out for the nicer brass case stuff and wont be using this for competition
i want it to be accurate enough to kill small animals and targets without much maintenance

You can do the same for less with a DI gun.

ETA and be more accurate.

Why would a DI gun be more accurate?

Short ansewer, no piston.

no granted with cheap wolf ammo you may not be able to tell.

So what do i need to make sure that a DI gun can shoot the steel case ammo?
I understand a DI gun would require more cleaning but at most I would only 100 rounds in a day of a target shooting with it
So would probably clean it every 500 rounds or so (which could be over the course of a couple months

Some guns run steel ammo just fine.  Others don't like it.  I think you'll just have to try it and find out.  You'll have to diagnose any problems as/when they occur ie. is it a cycling problem, mag problem, extraction problem etc.  Steel ammo tends to be a bit dirtier than other ammo in my opinion.

your choice if you want an piston kit or not.  i have experiance with the osprey kit.  it replaces the bcg as well.  nothing bad at all, but i would not spend the money on that again.  I would spend the money elsewhere.  i too have never had any problem with di.

Do basically you are saying
Between DI and piston you would rather save the cash and get a good DI gun?

A true 5.56 Nato chamber, from what I read aids in having wolf run.
I've seen guys run 1,000s (not at once) of wolf thru Bushmasters and Colts with no problems.

I had a DI M4 that had years of use with all manner of ammunition and never had a single jam. I also had no premature wear on any parts as a piston kit will cause. Also with a piston kit you are buying a proprietary product from a company that may or may not be around when you wear out something and it needs replacing.

Just stick with a DI gun, you can get better parts for the same money that you would be spending on a cheap piston kit. Take a cheap piston kit that costs $300 and put it on a cheap barrel and you still have a cheap barrel with a chamber that may or may not be in spec. Take that $300 and add it to the $300 you would already be spending on a BCG and barrel for a cheap kit, and go pick up a top of the line barrel and bolt like a BCG from Bravo Company and a Barrel from Noveske.
