I am assembling my first AR-15 tonight and have a question about the Pivot Pin Detent (and the Takedown Pin Detent). One end of those detents is flat, the other pointed. When I am working on the Pivot Pin Assembly, it calls for the Pivot Pin Detent spring to be inserted into the receiver first, then the Pivot Pin Detent. Which end, pointed or flat, goes into the receiver? In other words which end of the Pivot Pin Detent, flat or pointed, rests against the spring? Or does it matter? I have searched and looked at all the drawings I can find online, but my old eyes can't differentiate. Any help would be appreciated!  Thank You

Both pivot pin detents should have slightly pointed ends... The detent you're looking at sounds like the safety detent.

Kteaton, thank you for responding. Both the Pivot Pin Detent and the Takedown Pin Detent have one slightly pointed end, the other being flat. I need to know which end goes into the receiver first when assembling. Do you have any idea? This is my first AR15 build.

If all of your detents look like that, then yes you'd want the flat end against the spring, like BANGBANG223 said.

Thanks.  I got some like that once. I thought it was M&A parts though, might have been Model 1.  Most are rounded on both ends, but it doesn't really matter as long as the round end ends up in the pin and the flat end is against the spring like mentioned.  Good luck with the build.
