As the title states I'm trying to plan my first AR build. The caliber I've decided on is the 6.5 Grendel due to its' inherit accuracy, ballistic similarity of the 7.62 NATO and lower recoil. I'm not looking to make this a 1000m tack driver but would like to set it up as a intermediate (300 to 500m) or DM rifle.
I have a few question seeing my knowledge is extremely limited and must admit due to my bias against the AR platform in the past. I've never seen myself owning or even building a AR preferring the larger, heavier 7.62 bullets of the FALs and AKs. But currently I own 2 both are Rock Rivers and both are in 5.56 NATO, one a Entry Operator the other a pistol (7.5") which soon hopefully to be made into a SBR. And by the way both which I enjoy shooting. My thought is to take topics or steps of this build one sagement at a time to get the different input on each area of inquiry starting with the barrel. My thought is a 20" medium contour, stainless steel with a 1:8 twist rate from what I've read appears to be optimal for what I want to use it for. My question is: Is this the correct rifling twist rate and what barrel manufacturer should I look at that would not break the bank but give me the accuracy for the distances that I'll be shooting? I understand that the bolt will have to be match up with the barrel. So I'm guessing that I need a opinion to include the bolt as well. To understand where I'm coming from on this build. My father use to tell me when looking for a nice stereo system to invest in a quality set of speakers but not where only your dog could enjoy the quality. I guess that pretty much sums up where I'm coming from and the questions that I'll be asking. |
