I have been laid off from work, so money is tighter than ever.  That being said, as of tomorrow I may find out that a proper AR 15 is something I must buy ASAP or possibly lose out on a chance of owning forever.

I totally screwed up 2 years ago and bought a Vulcan from a friend for $500.  Wot a POS.  Please don't pile on.  I feel bad enough already.  I do have some decent accesories now at least.

I am looking for something like the DPMS sportical, 16" barrel, bare bones, but mid/high quality for self-defense/defense of our country's ideals.

Secondarily, what options to upgrade calibers would I have with a .223 lower.  6.8 SPC specifically?

Thank you in advance for helping someone new to evil black rifles.

I would recommend that you get yourself an inexpensive lower from the EE with an LPK and a good telestock like the MOE.  Then, as funds allows, but a DD Omega 9.0 rail system and a Troy BUIS.

Get on Bravo Company's mailing list immediately for when their 16" Mid-Length Upper comes back into stock.  Order one of these, a BCM BCG, and put it all together.

You will have a high-quality, functional rifle, and can save for an optic.

A relatively cheap route that'll put you into a good gun:

PK Firearms for a Bushmaster carbine upper w/RRA BCG, forged charging handle, A1/C7 receiver (no need to add sights), $525.

Many choices of lower receiver in the $100-120 range.

LPK from many sources +/-$60.

CAR stock from Model 1 Sales (I have one - they work just fine), $42.

The A1 upper has a fixed carry handle with iron sights that'll work, and you can stick an Aimpoint Micro on the carry handle with an ARMS #2 mount when funds allow. I use that setup on a couple of carbines and it works well. That stock will be fine, and you can upgrade when more funds are available later.

Buy a quality lower with lower parts. Then build it yourself. Find a used upper for sale on the EE.

Read the thread on "What breaks in a carbine course?" Pat Rogers says S&W are GTG.
