From a current EE ad:
Where can you go to "plink" with tracers? That seems like a REALLY bad idea. ![]() I thought tracers were 63gr (or is that only the Federal?). |
|
Before the 62 grain M855 ball replaced 55 grain M193 ammo, the tracer round used along with M193 was 55grain tracer designated M196 by the US. I have no idea what the Brits called it, but obviously Radway manufactured it. We have no problems plinking with tracer in bumfuck KS....I wouldn't recommend it in national forests, or BLM land. Smokey gets a little fussy about forest fires, for that matter so do the locals and you can't blame them. Just use your head. If you're in an area where fire is a risk, don't use tracers, period! |
| I plink right along with my reloads of M196 tracers. I just wait till its rained for a few days or theres snow on the ground and no problems at all shooting them. I do pretty much all my shooting on family land though so no shooting restrictions really which helps shoot fun ammo. |

Might be reloads using RORG brass. Since tracers are prohibited from importation, I highly doubt that this stuff is real British military tracer. Also, consider that at the time period the RORG headstamp was used, they were loading the M-856 type tracer which is not 55 gr. and has an orange tip intead of a red one IIRC. I'd like to see pics of this ammo... D.D. |
Very good point. The British never had 55 grain projectiles, so either these are reloads or the poster is incorrect about the bullet weight. I found exactly one tracer out of five cans of radway I bought, it has a red tip, not orange. |
Uh...you guys ever see the range at Camp Perry? Pretty sure those boolets are Lake Erie bound. And where do you think the Coast Guard practices? |
|
Yep, looks like the real deal, only this is "L1A2" tracer, which is essentially the same as the US M-856 tracer, suitable for use ONLY in 1:7 twist barrels dut to the very long projectile length. I suspect that these are the tracers that were pulled from all the ammo that came in on clips in bandoleers. Remember when you opened the can to find all the ammo loose with a pile of stripper clips and empty bandos? Someone had to pull out all the tracers, and I doubt that it happened over in England. I wonder how this guy got this stuff? Great price if you are into tracers and have the right barrel twist... D.D. |
That's gay because I was going to buy 200 rounds off of him. |
The Coasties just went thru a mile of shit about live fire practice on the waters from whining boaters and the green lead in the water freaks ect. They planned to tow a few target boats I recall and shoot at them. The new or updated cutters apparently have M60's in the latest variants on them and need trigger time. After all the bitch pitching they are going to do it with like notice to the press and marinas ect.No winter practice as I recall. I am not a boat liker at all as nearly drowned twice but got lots of people I know that shoot clay birds off their boats and seagulls and coramants are rumoured to catch lead poisoning also from .22 rifles |
I agree. I think the ATF would like to know that also. They probably came from Century International Arms who has them for sale to LAW ENFORCEMENT only since the tracers are imported. ATF regs say no sale other than law enforcement. Century probably sold them on a Chief's or DA's letterhead and this dumbass is selling them to the public. Very risky, I would think. |
Long story-----My son and I were shooting at a local farm (where we have permission). One of the neighbors does not like the shooting, and called the Sheriff. Well, of course they have to investigate every call. We were shooting ARs at small targets of tannerite. One of the deputies I know very well, so we were showing what the tannerite does at 75yds, and I offered to let them shoot at the targets, which he took up the offer. I had apparently loaded a tracer when we loaded the mags, and it started a fire in the grass behind the target on the edge of the field. We all high-tailed it out and stomped it out. They laughed, but I was pretty red-faced. No dogs were hurt in this incident. I also know of a guy who started a 5 acre grass fire shooting spotter-tracer 50bmg. Tracers=not ordinary plinking ammo, but still fun if done carefully. |
Is this a NEW rule Back in the LATE 80`s I had some 7.62x39mm TRACERS I that shot/looked green I think is was made in China Last time I bought Tracers was in 2001 I bought a BELT/links of 5.56mm WIN M855 Every 4th was a Lake City M856 Tracer ( that lot of win m855 aws HOT ) I would rather had the M855 myself since I really dont need alot of tracers |
