| I am looking to build a lightweight AR lower receiver, with the ultimate goal of completing a 16" barrel rifle that weighs under 4 pounds. I have been researching polymer lowers, and was wondering if anyone has experience with different brands of polymer lowers? I am preferably looking for a stripped lower that is under 5.5 ounces but is still structurally sound. A bonus would be the lower costing less than $100. Anyone's thoughts on this? |

What the esteemable Mr Aston & I are speaking of is the Cav Arms Mk 2 plastic lower/stock, manufactured by Cav Arms for themselves & Sabre Defense, and now manufactured by GWACS. It's a one piece plastic lower and A1 length stock. This eliminates the common failure point of most plastic lower receivers - the weak area between the buffer tube boss and the rear takedown pin hole. I bought one of EP Arm's 80% lowers in Zombie Green. I am using it with my AR57 upper though. I think 5.7x28 FN is low enough power that it should be easier on a poly lower than 5.56x45 NATO/.223 Rem. Anyway no problems so far. And I know better than to try to use my rifle as a pry bar.

I hate to say I cancelled my order when I found I was bumped to "1 June" if I recall for delivery.
It wasn't a lot of money but I do have things to do with it between now and then. For now I'm taking the 'hint' and staying out of the poly lower business. I was a Glock early adopter when people told me plastic pistols would never hold up and revolvers were still king. I'm not a hater - just biding my time and watching for a while longer. YMMV and good luck! ps Gads I'm getting old. |
