Hello guys I just recieved a couple boxes of Port 308 from AIM.Mine is headstamped BF 79-50 &BF 79-64. Can anyone tell me about this ammo? Anyone shot it over a chrono? I read the other night, on one of these threads that all "surplused " ammo has something wrong with it. Was this ammo too old? Did the Port's change weapons? Was it in a flood? I opened one pack, the ammo "LOOKS" great. My curiosity is peaked and I know someone here probably knows. All info is appreciated. |
| All the Port I've tried has been outstanding! The crates look old, but the contents are fine. My remaining crates are dated 79 and 80. Probably the only other currently available 308 that can compare is the Australian ammo, and it may even be just a tad better. Both are very accurate for surplus, and seem pretty clean. |

I have shot quite a bit of it through my FAL and, for me, it has been very reliable and consistent ammo. Several friends have shot this ammo in a variety of weapons with equally good results. Availability of this ammo has really dried up at a lot of the local gun shows. I buy it when I find it. Never shot any of the Port over a chrono. I'd be interested in knowing the velocity. |

No problems here with portugese. Aim has the cheapest I have found. And the rounds I have are NATO (cross/circle) headstamped, so they must meet all NATO interchangability specs (assuming minimal component degredation) it should be roughly equivalent ballistically to M80 Ball - 147-149 grain FMJ at 2720-2750 fps. As to the jacket - NATO specs call for GMCS - Gilding Metal Clad Steel. So yes, virginia, these rounds most likely DO have steel in the jacket, so check with your range first before launching a mag-full downrange. I am of the opinion that GMCS rounds probably don't have much of an adverse effect on barrel life, provided you use a chrome-lined barrel. If really want to test for steel bullet casings, try a strong magnet. They will likely do this at the range anyhow. And: All surplus ammo is not bad. I just suggest caution when picking ammo that you might have to rely on. Everyone I know uses surplus for practice and plinking, it is cheap and generally functions well. All components have a finite lifespan, and the lifespan is dependent on the conditions of storage. There is no way to know how surplus ammunition was stored. Hope this helps |
| The surplus to avoid like herpes is the Indian 7.62x51, comes in ten round plastic wraps, and is un belted MG ammo. This stuff SUCKS. bullets wobbling around in case necks, uneven powder loads, just plain bad. I have put 700-800 rds. of Hirtenberger through my CAI CETME and it is great. Everything I have ever read about Port is that it is as good as any, better than most. I just haven't bought any yet because I have always gotten good deals on Hirt from Denny's. YMMV, but you should be fine. Are you shooting it from a FAL, AR10, or HKG3/91/CETME? |
