Hi everyone, im new here. been reading and learning for a while, but this is my first post.

I have a question about positioning optics on my AR.  I have a Rock River Arms Tactical Operator II, and for optics I have an Eotech 512 and just got the Eotech G33 magnifier. my problem is i also have Dueck Defense Rapid Transition Sights and if i put the rear RTS sight behind the magnifier the magnifier hits the rear RTS when i put it in the out of the way position (if that makes sense).

what I ended up doing was putting the rear RTS sight between the 512 and the G33 which allows for full motion of the g33 but every image of an Eotech holographic sight with a magnifier they are much closer than the way i have mine set up.

I was wondering if any of the much more knowledgeable than me people here would enlighten my of a better way to do this configuration, any advise would be very helpful.

Hopefully this pic will help.

Before I start making any kind of recommendation, what possessed you to set it up this way? Also, what is the purpose for this AR? Are you running or going to run combat courses with it? I am wondering why you have the irons on 45 degree mounts rather than in a co-witness setup. Additionally, the rear BUIS is typically mounted as far to the rear as possible. The magnifier and the optic are usually mounted in-line next to each other. Also, the EOTech should be mounted on the receiver rail and not bridging the gap between the receiver rail and the handguard rail. One more thing, why was there not more thought given to your optics/sights setup before you started buying everything? You spent good money for the AR and the optics, but the setup is all wrong for the most effective use of the optics/sights.

The purpose of this AR is just target shooting at this point and when i get better i would like to get into a little 3 gun. I would Love to do combat courses, but i haven't found any in my area.

I am a total noobie when it comes to optics. I got the 512 for Christmas last year and got the magnifier yesterday for longer distances.

The 45 degree sights were basically for backup. I didnt know that should be in a cowitness setup but apparently i really F'd up with my thinking. I had the 512 totally on the upper, but with the angled sites there wasnt enough room so I apparently foolishly moved it up a little to make more room.

And to your question about more thought put into all this?  i thought it would all work out. i knew in my head what i wanted to do but it didnt work out after all was said and done. This is my first AR type of rifle and i guess i went overboard with it.  It isnt that thought didnt go into it, but im starting to understand my thinking was wrong.

Any advise or thoughts would be greatly appreciated

The first thing I would recommend doing is to remove the optics and the sights and starting fresh. Mount the EOTech as far forward on the receiver rail as possible while keeping the mount completely on the receiver rail. The non-mounted are can over hang the gap between the receiver and the handguard. Next, mount the magnifier directly behind the EOTech as close as possible without touching. Now, here is the next thing I would recommend. Buy a rear flip-up BUIS ( like MAGPUL MBUS or MBUS PRO). Mount the rear sight on the top rail at the rear of the receiver (just in front of the charging handle). With the magnifier flipped up, it should clear the BUIS. When the magnifier is flipped to the side, you should be able to flip up the rear and front sights and be able to co-witness with the EOTech. This will give you a functional setup, especially if you wan to run it in a combat course. In the case of 3-Gun competition, I would recommend setting up a different AR (using a mid-length gas system) that is more suited for that type of competition.

45 degree sights are intended for use with magnified optics (scopes) so that if you have a close target you can rapidly transition (roll the rifle 45 degrees and use the iron sights).  A magnified scope can be hard or impossible to use in close (under 50-100 yds) since the field of view is too small and it may not focus close enough.

The Eotech is a great close in optic, so the 45 degree irons don't make sense.

A flip up iron, co-witnessed with the Eotech would be a better option.  Many of those will fit under the magnifier when it is being used.  If the Eotech fails, you fold up your BUIS (Back Up Iron SIght) and use that, sighting through the Eotech (with the magnifier flipped to the side).

The way you have it now should work, provided you can see the Eotech OK through the magnifier (and if the mag isn't too far back to see with your cheek in normal position (cheek weld) on the stock), but it isn't ideal.  If works for you, use it, but I think you would be better getting a normal flip up iron sight and mount it on the top rail behind/under the magnifier.  Sell your 45 degree irons, or save for a future AR with a magnified scope.

Position of the Eotech seems fine.  Post above is correct that you don't want to bridge between the receiver and hand rail, but I think you mount is all receiver with the battery compartment over the rail (which is normal).

Thank you, sounds easy enough. thank you for your time and insight. i kinda figured what i was doing was a huge f-up. so i will just take the angled sight totally out of the picture and have plenty of room. now i just need to get a rear BUIS. maybe i can find someone that would trade me a nice folding Rear BUIS for the Dueck Defense RTS, Who knows.

Since your rifle came with an integral front flip sight, a regular rear BUIS was definitely the easier option.
Keep in mind when you move your magnifier forward that you can now try NTCH, if eye relief allows for it.
Post your DD RTS on the EE and you might get most of your money back or work out a trade.

All good advice here. If I were you OP I would save those off set BUIS, buy a regular BUIS and build yourself a nice midlength rifle for three gun with a scope and then use those off set irons on that build

Exactly what I was thinking earlier. Save the offsets for a future 3-gun AR build.

Thank you everybody for the great advise. i really do appreciate it, i took the angle sights off and put them aside for later use and will purchase a rear BUIS probably this weekend. Looking at the Bravo Company Rear Battle sight, seems to get good reviews. Since the front sight is a gas block also do i need a riser or shoud it be good to go as is??

Thanks again to everyone for all your help in un-f'ing my AR
