For those wanting to shoot more of a variety of ammo rather than just the Federal Bulk Packs  (which do work well), there's an easy fix it turns out.

I did some filing on the feed ramps on the BDM mag itself and have been able to get even Remington Golden Bullets, which before were FTF-ing  probably 75% of the time and going vertical in the chamber area, to feed reliably.  I just sent probably 60-70 rounds through one of my mags and didn't have any issues with the Golden Bullets.  Now I can put all that ammo I've got laying around to use.

I took a small round file (it's maybe 1/4" round in the largest area of the file and tapers to 1/8" at the tip) and removed some material on the BDM mag feed ramp.  I probably took it down another 1/8-1/16" below where it was to begin with.  (I made the ramps start further down into the mag body.)  I then contoured the entire ramp a little bit so it was a smoother transition to the M261 insert, but the top-most section I didn't have to do a lot with.

The issue I was having with the golden bullets was that the rounds were basically nosing into the mag body below the factory feed ramp on the BDM mag, so when the carrier hit it to shove the round into the chamber, instead of going smoothly it basically nosed in, stuck briefly, and then bounced up vertically.  At that point, it got smashed by the carrier coming forward.  What the re-contour did was get the feed ramps well below the nose of the bullets so it has nowhere to go but a smooth ramp into the M261 chamber.  I used to have problems even with manually unloading the mags after loading them with Golden Bullets, and now they all just flip right out with the flick of a finger on them.

I'll try it out with more ammo, but it sure as heck works with the Fed bulk pack and Remington Golden Bullets (at least) now.  Before this, the only thing I could get to work was the Fed Bulk packs.

I just spent the last hour reading this entire post. There is a wealth of knowledge here about this conversion. I had a theory after shooting the 261, that the lower edge of the chamber needed to be slightly ramped. I have tried Federal and Remington Bulk with similar results. Almost an Identical number of Failure to Chamber, Bent Bullet with a Slightly Shaved Lower Side. I only have 2 weeks/400 rounds experience with the 261 as I mainly shoot Cieners. I believe with a little work the 261 can perform just as well.
I will rework the chamber on one unit before my next range trip, Hopefully Olympic Arms reads this Post and will do this slight mods to their conversion unit chambers to make them more functional. I'm sure they will. Thank you all for the Great Research and Developement you're doing here. It's great to have so many Brilliant Brains helping so my Old, Feeble mind doesn't have to overwork itself.

I didn't do much to the chamber/feed ramp area of the M261 insert itself.  On my mags, at least, the top ledge of the ramp built into the mag ends well above the bottom of the M261 chamber insert.  That being the case, I got most/all of my success in getting Remington ammo to feed by re-working the feed ramps on the mag itself.  It appears after a little further looking that the main reason the Rem ammo FTF's is that often-times they don't sit on the top of the mag in a slightly nose-up configuration.  Instead, they sit straight across.  As to why they don't just sit up to where the feed lips would catch them, and instead sit below them, I can't tell yet.  Maybe the follower??  Who knows...  Either way, though, once the feed ramp was extended downward in the mag body to where the ammo will catch it even when the ammo is sitting flat across, my FTF issues went away.

Guys at BDM... if you're reading this, this change above would be a very slight design change on the mag, but would eliminate probably most of the FTF issues folks are having with the mags.  If you want me to send you one of these to take a look at and test, let me know through IM.

I went to the range yesterday. I have 4 BDM Mags that I use with the unit. I took Federal Bulk with me as they worked the best on the last trip. Out of 100 rounds only 1 FTF, multiple hits, no bang. obviously a bad round. I had 11 rounds that "Nosed Up" into the top edge of the chamber, and bent. I did a lot of checking with dummy rounds and can see there is something to what rob99rt is saying. It appears that the rounds at times sit at different angles, depending on how many rounds are in the Magazine. I believe the controlling factor is spring pressure and the curvature of the magazine body. The rounds seem to hit the base of the ramp in the mag and kick up at a sharp angle. Other times they just pop up and are pushed straight into the chamber. A little rework on the magazine ramp as mentioned by rob99rt seems like it might correct these feed problems. Only hesitation I have had is that a change to the magazine is a perminent thing. Guess I better get over that, I have spares. I'll give it a try but it's going to be a couple weeks before I can do a live test. The range has a class that screws up my normal day. 3rd Monday of every month.
Thanx for the good info,

Did the Ramp Mod as mentioned above on 2 mags, tested with 20 dummy rounds (within 1 thousandths in dimension to Federal Bulk). Numerous Feed Failures prior to filing, No failures to feed after about 15 minutes of careful work reshaping the Magazine Ramp. This most likely varies from Gun to Gun so If you don't have a feed problem don't do anything. I held the bolt back with a Sling Mount Screw, Removed the Magazine's guts and visually checked the alignment "Mag Installed" at several points during filing. I aligned the top of the Feed Ramp down to the bottom of the chamber and lowered the feed ramp into the Magazine just as mentioned above, a SMALL AMOUNT. Can't Live Fire for days, but I am confident it will be Way Better.

I tried to take a picture, but the change is so slight and such a small area that I can't get a good picture even with a 7 Mega Pixal Camera. Can't get the lighting right so you could see the difference. More or less it's just smoothing the transition by lowering the feed ramp slightly where a bullet at a low angle will start feeding smoothly. 1/16 to slightly more at the rear of the feed ramp, smoothing the ramp itself gently and getting the correct height Ramp to Chamber. Even a picture of mine may vary to what you need with your rifle. It's File to Fit, at Your Own Risk. This wasn't my idea, but it was a good one from what I have seen so far.
Good luck,

I got my OLY RFA today from midway and the lower edge of the chamber was already beveled, what I was asking, was the modification to the feed ramp area of the mag. maybe I wasent clear, sorry.  I did take a file and barely cleaned up the flashing from the moulding process in the feed ramp area. I cannot get it to FTF after the "tweaking" of the ramp.

Yes, the area you file is on the mag.  You'll see at the top of the mag the feed ramp built into it.  Just take it down another 1/16 to 1/8" into the mag body and then smooth the transition to the feed ramp already moulded into the mag body.

Here are some pics I just took:

Original location of feed ramp:
as you can see there are areas on the feed ramp which has not been filed.  That's the original moulded area.  Strangely, the feed ramp feels smooth, but it sure as heck doesn't look like that under a macro setting on a 10 MP camera...  At least you can tell where I've filed.

New feed ramp location:

As always, file at your own risk, but this worked wonders on the f-t-feed issue for me.

rob99rt, Great Pictures, I did 2 more Mags that had FTF Problems because I am confident this will correct the issues. I loaded 20 Dummy rounds in them and cycled all with no failures just as the first 2 Mags. It's hard to help people understand that this is so simple to do, that it is a very minor rework. I hope that your pictures will make for easier understanding. Fantastic Cure you have come up with. I think maybe the accuracy will even improve. It's my thought that even the rounds that had made it to the chamber were slightly bent causing poor accuracy (4"groups at 25 yards). All of my Cieners will hold about 3/4". Hope I am Right with this on the M261. It will really make me feel better to shoot it if the groups come down in size.

Ran more ammo through the modified mags.

Thunderbolts
more mini-mags
Winchester Dynapoints
more Golden Bullets

Everything worked just fine.  BTW, it was quite interesting just how dirty some of the .22 ammo is.  Shooting Thunderbolts through it pretty much sent up a smoke screen in front of me.  That stuff is horribly dirty.  The Dynapoints are also quite underpowered compared to the other ammo, but that works for suppressed guns b/c it's REALLY quiet.  Much less report than the other ammo, but it still cycled just fine.  Before the mod, that stuff wouldn't cycle at all for some reason.  The mini-mags and GB's are probably about the same noise-wise.

FWIW, I think we've got a fix to the cycling problem.  I can't really get it to screw up now.

Aquila high velocity .22LR seem too long for my BDM M261 magazines (at least th 40 grain), however Remington bulk pack from Gander Mountain seemed just fine (except for some FTFire).

The Aquila either noses into the front of the magazine or pops up vertically.

I got the chance to shot between classes at the Range. Tried the 4 Mags that I modified during the week per rob99rt's insturctions. Remington Golden Bullets fed perfectly 1 Fail to Fire (2nd Hit Fired it, Attributed to Ammo) and 1 Fail to Eject (Hung in the Gas Tube, Attributed to Rapid Fire) out of 50. 100 Federal's fed and all fired,,, IN TIME. Had 7 that hung in the Gas Tube, next rounds loaded but the bolt was held back by the ejection failure. Cleared and then fired. Again, I attribute the Ejector Failures to Rapid Fire. Possibly the Bolt is rebounding too fast, May try cutting 1 Coil at a time on the Return spring to see if it helps or just let it break in first. I think I will decide which rifles to dedicate to conversions some day and cut the gas tubes after they pass through the front of the upper. I have some of these Ejection Failures with Cieners too. Still don't think these M261's are quite as accurate as Cieners but they are closer now that the Ammo isn't being bent going into the Chamber.
To do the mod to the Magazine I aligned the front of the Feed Ramp with the bottom of the Chamber, Smoothed the Flash on the ramp itself and Lowered the back of the Feed Ramp near the Follower about 1/16 of an inch. I used an ??? Oval Shaped Jewelers File and formed a Very Slight Valley in the middle of the Feed Ramp as I Filed.
Again if Your Kit isn't having feed problems don't do this...
Good Luck,

I bought an Oly RFA kit (M261) and BDM magazine from one of our members on EE. Went to the range today to try it out. I only had two brands of .22 ammo. Federal HP and Remington Golden Bullet. I was shooting the kit in a Colt A1 upper with a 20" 1/12 C MP Chrome bore barrel. Stag lower.

The Federal ammo functioned %100. feed, fire, extract.& eject, no problems. Accuracy is a tad less than 1" groups at 25 yrds and 1 1/2" groups at 50 yrds.
And for you number crunchers: average vel-1185 fps, ES- 38.47 and SD-16.27.

The Remington Golden Bullet didn't fare as well. I had several duds and a couple of mis feeds. The accuracy was a bit better than the federal ammo. But, accuracy is a moot point if you don't know when the next dud will show up. Average vel-1178 fps, ES- 53.67, and SD-16.70. Almost a copy of the Federal ballistics.

I'd say the BDM magazine worked well. I don't blame the mag for Remingtons failures.

The info on the Silver Bear 55grn ammo has nothing to do with the BDM mag, but I'll throw it out there anyway. (Hey, I had to blast out the gas tube.) It functioned flawlessly. Accuracy was about 2 " at 100 yards. And now...the numbers: average vel- 3113 fps, ES- 30.63 and SD- 16.64.
All chrony readings were taken at 16 feet from the muzzle. I enjoy every minute at the range!

Well, I have done 5 Feed Ramp Mods and all 5 Mags feed perfectly. Used Remington and Federal Bulk. Still some cases are being kicked up into the gas tube. I'm hesitant to file on the top of the Feed Lips which may correct this.  I shoot these type Conversion units in 12 different AR's. I am sure things will be perfect in some AR's and the same in others, as far as the cases being kicked up inside the receiver.
SO-13

UPDATE August 10th: Went to the Range Today and took a Jewelers File set along. Ran 3 BDM Mags through. One worked perfectly, 2 Kicked the Cases up jamming some into the Gas Tube. Filed a very small amount of the Front most Feed Lip down on the Ejector Side (Only the part beside the actual Feed Ramp, Only Took Off About 1/64" Or So)  This may vary from/to Rifle/Kit. Both the Problem Mags ran perfect afterward.
Also installed another Oly M261 after the fix and that cut the group size down by 1/2. I don't have an explanation for that. That's a subject for another Post.

I fired a couple hundred rounds today using 2 more BDM Mags that I've Modified as Previously Stated above.  Had one Misfire, Federal Bulk Ammo. All rounds Fed and Extracted Perfectly.
Conversion Note: Because this is a Focal Point Post for the M261's:::::
I was using a Colt A1 Upper 1:12 Twist and the Olympic 261 Conversion that had been putting rounds all over the Black at 25 yards in another rifle. What a Difference in this Upper. 25 Yard slow fire groups were In the Bulls Eye. Rapid Fire was about 2 inch, over all the rounds fired. 1x Red Dot, BSA. I had wondered if this specific 261 was just out of spec when it was in the Carbine I started it in. I have put another M261 in the Carbine and the Groups had Closed up greatly. Some Conversion Units seem to work better in a Different Upper. Good thing to remember.

Got 3 M261 BDM, had to work all three to get them to latch, then had to work the feed ramps  to eliminate the stove piping.  They all work pretty well now. (One still shows signs of the bolt dragging on the mag slightly.)

Will probably be ordering a few more soon.

After reading rob99rt's post, about the magazine modification, I decided to try it. Took a half round file to my four BDM mags. Went to the range with the Federal bulk pack, Remington Golden bullet and a box of American Eagle. The first two are 36 grns and the AE is 40 grns. The mods worked great. All three brands worked without any failures. They feed, fired, extracted & ejected perfectly.  I expected the Federal to work, it worked before the modifications, but the Remington had several/many mis-feeds pre-mod. The Americam Eagle did not feed even a single round pre-mod. I'll gather up some different brands and try them, but I'm thinking the feed problems are solved. It made sense that the ramp was just too high before. Now I can find the brand that my barrel likes best and use that ammo. It's nice to have a choice !
Ten or fifteen seconds with a half round file and BDM can sell mags that would probably feed any 22lr.

Thanks, rob99rt, for the fix.

EDIT: Forgot to note that Remington did have several dud rounds, but that isn't the fault of the magazines.

Sorry to be a newb about the M261 conversion, but what's the general opinion of the mag inserts? I am assuming the BDM mags are a solution to a problem that existed with the original inserts? Or do they work well? Seems to me they could move in the mag body. Again, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm considering a .22 conversion.

The mag inserts for the M261 kit are only 10-rounds.  The BDM mags make shooting a lot MUCH more fun.

I have a dilemma:  Do I get a Ciener/Atchison-type kit (probably Spike Tactical), or a M261?

Reading here, I get the impression that the BDM M261 magazines are somewhat tempermental and require some degree of re-working to achieve acceptable reliability.

I also get the impression from other sources that the Ciener kits (Ciener, CMMG, Spike's) all run pretty much flawlessly with the appropriate BDM mags, with no tinkering needed.

I have a chance to pick-up a new-condition M261 with (or without) several 10-round insert magazines.  I'm in NY and am limited to 10 rounds anyhow, so capacity is not an issue.

Help me decide:

1. Buy the M261, use the original military insert magazines

2. Buy the M261 w/o insert mags and use it with BDM 10-round magazines

3. Buy the Spike's Tactical Ciener-type kit and use it with BDM 10-round Ciener type magazines.

Thank you for your opinions-

It only requires just a touch of work with a file.  If they've modified the feedramp so that it's not an issue anymore, then they won't need any re-working at all.

And when/if you ever get out of NY, buy the BDM full-capacity mags and shoot to your heart's content.

I appreciate your advice, and went with your suggestion.  My new M261, four new insert magazines, bag of new spare parts, and the tech. manual arrived today...I feel like I paid too much, but prices in general on conversion kits are currently doing the supply/demand thing...

From a different source, I bought another two used insert magazines, but they have not arrived yet.

Now my curiosity is up, way up...
I'm thinking about the possibility of using a BDM plastic follower in the surplus M261 insert magazine...maybe some Dremel work needed, maybe simply not possible?

The advantage of the swap would be to gain the last-round hold-open feature of the BDM (which the insert mags lack).

Has anyone tried this before?

If not, is anyone willing to "eyeball" the two followers side-by-side and see if it is worth proceeding with, maybe attempt to insert the BDM into the M261?

Thank you-

Not sure on if the followers will work Karl, but I can tell you you will not be disappointed with the M261 kit.  As for the BDM mags, I have 4 of them and only the latest one with the bolt hold open has given me a few minor headaches.  Best suggestion I found was to load them up and leave them loaded for 3 or 4 days when they are new.  I did this and my first mags have run flawlessly since the first trip out.  BDM will take care of you even if you have a problem though.  They are GTG in my book.

I will probably stay with the military mags since I'm limited to 10 rounds by law.

Also, I have come to the conclusion that the kit I just bought as a M261 is not a surplus M261, but rather the M261-based Oly Arms.

The kit is unmarked, has a parkerized finish, and chisel-shaped firing pin, all suggestive of the Oly.

Seems well-made, but I would have preferred the genuine article, and the EE seller won't take it back for a refund...said it was "an honest mistake" on his part...not the way I handle my own honest mistakes, for sure.

I wouldn't worry about it.  I "chisel cut" the firing pin on my surplus M261 soon after I got it and it fires more reliably as a result with nice, deep strikes to the rims.  When I was running a light hammer spring it worked just fine with the chisel cut, but wouldn't fire off a single round in "round" configuration with the light springs.  Have fun shooting it.

Don't sweat the Oly kit Karl, That is what I have as well.  It seems to be an almost exact copy of the original, and mine has been nothing but reliable for many thousands of rounds.  Plus Oly would back it up if anything ever goes wrong with it.  It actually seems beefier to me than the ciener units.  One of the best gun purchases I have ever made, and has paid for itself many times over already.

Tried the BD mag in my Ciener set up. Follower would hang up on last 2 rounds. Almost like not enough spring tension. Ciener 10 round runs flawlessly. Also, FYI, bought 2 firing pins from BD, 1 was too thick to fit in bolt, the other fit, but could not get unit to fire. Discovered the 2nd pin was too short as compared to stock pin. Since then, bought a couple of pins from Kuehl; they operate flawlessly.

Just an update for those interested in newer purchase.  Bought two mags from BDM for my M261 last week.  One smoke and one black.  At the shooting hole this weekend, I noted that the front of the mags had that sharp "step" at the front edge of the magazine feed ramp.  Sure enough, with Fed Bulk and Mini-mags, many of the rounds would strike this "step" , nose up and miss the chamber high.  On the black mag, I filed this "step" down slightly, and the feeding improved.  On the smoke mag, the bullet impacts actually started to break this step out, on its own.  I dressed the step a little more on both mags, and got them running 100%.

Both mags were very tight in the mag well and in alignment with the mag catch.  Things had loosened up a little by the end of the range session, approx. 450 rounds.  There does seem to be one additional "problem" that I need to address.  I found that if I pulled backwards on the mag while firing, I could actually induce a light firing pin hit.  I would normally not say this was an issue, unless you use a mag well hold, and hold very low.  Still, I may see if I want to fiddle with this issue.

Overall I am very pleased with the mags.  I will definately be ordering a few more, and the little bit of added file work on the front of the mag feed ramp is what I would call pretty minimal effort.  I think I will also be ordering a few extra follwers, as the hit to the back when the "bolt holds open" does seem to make a distinct mark.

Ed,

Looks like I was a week early  Thanks for the heads-up, but I think i am gonna stick with the black (opaque) mags.  I have never owned mags that I could see the rounds, and I find it a little useless in conjunction with the AR magwell.  25 bucks is sure attractive, though.....

With the exception of a short-lived special at Palmetto State Armory a year or so ago, that is the best price I've ever seen on M261 mags.

Since I was the guy to recommend filing/sanding the mag feed lips to get other ammo to feed besides the Fed bulk pack, I figured I'd chime in and tell folks to NOT sand all the way to the top of the feed lips if possible, as the plastic gets too thin and will break.  I found this yesterday by taking the mags to the range and noticed after 2 or 3 mags worth that the Golden bullets would start randomly mis-feeding.  I imagine that I've put a few hundred rounds through each of these mags since I modded them with no problems, so I put the mags aside and started looking them over.  It wasn't too hard to spot the problem (the circled part in red below is where it broke out).  The top edge of the feed ramp where it sticks above the flat area (look below) actually snapped off a bit and left a small hole in the top of the feed ramp on one side.  When a bullet hit this just right, it mis-fed and slammed into the lower edge of the M261 insert.  Now, Federal bulk pack still worked just fine, but the GBs did not feed reliably with the broken ramp due to their more round/wide nose.  I'd say at least 1 round out of every mag misfed, but would have probably gotten worse if the other side broke off as well.

Now, how did I fix my screw-up?  Easy... JB Weld.

I mixed up some JB, smeared it on the feed ramp and the hole with a toothpick, got it to roughly the same contour as it was when I started, and let it setup overnight.  This morning, when it was still not completely cured, I went to town with a round file and some 220 grit sandpaper and ended up with this:

Since the JB still isn't completely cured, I'm not going to cycle it in the rifle yet.  However, hand-cycling by pushing the GBs out with my thumb worked fine after getting the lower portion of the feed ramp back to its original contour.  I found that with any JB on the lower portion of the feed ramp which I'd re-contoured caused the GBs to nose in and not want to move at all.  (It's the portion you can see directly below the gray JB Weld that looks like it has a bunch of scratches in it). FWIW, those scratches were put there by me before apply the JB Weld...  It wouldn't have stuck well to the well-polished plastic, so I had to rough it up a bit, but the portion is completely smooth now that it's been resanded.  The area at the end of the pointer is where it broke out.  It was only about 1/16" wide hole, but it still was enough to cause the mis-feeds.

I am going to clean up the little bit of JB Weld on the top edge of the feed ramps, but figured I'd show you guys what I did to fix it in case anybody else went too crazy on the top portion of the feed ramps and had one of them break out.  Don't sweat it... it's an easy fix.

So are the bugs pretty much worked out of these magazines?

The ones I received don't fit all the way in unless you pull the bolt back before inserting the mag. Which area are you all filing down to make it fit?

The filing doesn't deal with mag fitment into the magwell.  It's only for feeding issues and resolves them by filing/sanding on the feedramp of the mag itself.  FWIW, if the mag catch is too tight, maybe back it off a turn and try to insert it again.  I've had trouble with plastic mags in my ARs sometimes because of that.  Easy fix, though.

I finally got a chance to try the mags today. After 25 rounds in each mag they fit perfectly. They work great too. Highly recommended.

Is their any possibility BDM will make such magazines for the Airforce 22 conversion unit ?. I have had one for 21 + years and all I have ever had to do to it is deburr the rear of the firing pin after some thousands of rounds , replace the springs and replace the roll pin for the chamber insert to bar connection. But then again my 22 unit was new when I got it and I have since put over 10K rounds through it over the years. I have two of those white 10 shot magazines... would love to to up the ante with 20 + cap mags for it.
I never was terribly impressed with the M261 units... which were relegated to dust collectors when the A2's were eventually issued to "us" then.

Is there any sort of loading device that one can purchase to make these mags easier to load?  The last 5 rounds are a real mother to get in there.

Good Dog!!! Good Dooog!!  Good Dog wanna cookie?

That is some of the best cash I've spent in a long time, picking up a Black Dog M261 mag. It's a 10rd (I'm in Kalifornia. I can't tell you how loudly those little molded in capacity limiting pins are screaming for my dremel's loving embrace. Must ignore felonious voices in my head!) Just got it today and ran 350 rounds thru it with no magazine related probs at all.  The only 3 probs were likely ammo related (fed american eagle). Either the rounds were duds or the hammer strikes were light or the bolt didn't go completely into battery and the firing pin couldn't make full contact. Most likely the last option.

Anyway, back to the magazine. Fit and finish were excellent. Love those brass screw inserts. I have no doubts that they will outlive the rest of the magazine. The empty magazine wouldn't seat with the bolt closed without a solid whack, but that's a non-issue. Loaded mags went in easy and locked tight. (Colt A3 lower) Not one issue with misfeeds! Yeah!!! As soon as I have a bit more scratch I'm picking up a few more.

My only gripe, and this is a truly chickenshit gripe, is that I prefer the size and shape of old school 20 round mags over that of 30 rd mags.  If I were master of the universe I might also dictate that a mag follower thumb button like on ruger, P22 and high standard pistol mags  be engineered in, but I'm not so who cares.  This is a good magazine.
