What differences would I notice in the different levels of variable power scopes from Leupold?

I was wanting a supersniper 10x for my LR308 but a friend bought one and damned if I can even see the mildots.  I have an astigmatism and find it difficult to focus on the reticle at all.   Anyhow I'm considering buying a VX-I and having the custom target knobs made up.   I can always range the target the easy way with my laser rangefinder.

Is this a viable option or am I missing something that's gonna piss me off later when I realized I flushed my money?

I dont compete, this will be a rifle used for hunting and some informal grudge match time at the range.  I do however want to be able to adjust the scope on the range for the appropriate distance and avoid holdover.

Better glass = better clarity.

Have you ever looked through a cheap pair of binoculars and everything looked a little fuzzy?  That is cheap glass.  Now I am not saying that a VXI is going to be fuzzy but the picture will not be as clear as compared to a VXII or III...kind of like HD TV for scopes.

My wife's rifle has a VXI in 3x9x40 and I just sold a VXII in 3x9x40 and never noticed any difference.   Maybe it would be more noticeable in a higher power scope?

As you go up the the VX line, light transmisson will increase, along with clarity.  With a VXI at dawn or dusk it will be a little harder to see the crosshairs especially against a dark background vs the VXII or VXIII.  Give Mike at CSGunworks a call and he will explain the diff. in detail..plus they have great prices..also you might want to look into some of the illumated reticles
