I'm looking to start predator/varmint hunting with my AR.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I'm looking for setup tips, etc.  I'm an experienced big-game hunter but I realize the same things do not apply for coyote hunting as with whitetail deer.  Thanks for any input.

Predator/Varmint hunting? - Night vision
Whitetail Deer - shot placement

Either way you need a decent scope. Are you "hunting" as in actually hunting, or "hunting" as in sitting in a tree and waiting?

I sense the sarcasm, but if you are speaking of hunting as painting my face and walking around with a spear...then no.  Hunting as in using a predator call and utilizing a blind, then yes.  I realize I need a decent scope...as far as night vision, I will be hunting during daylight hours.  Shot placement is not an issue.  I'm a well qualified marksman.  Thanks for the help...or lack thereof.

Get a good scope. What do you have for an AR? If you don't have one yet, get the RRA Predator Pursuit.

I suggest checking out the "small game & trapping" section in the "outdoors" forum...lots of info there about predator hunting.

That's just it...I got a RRA LAR-15 this time last year.  I'm hoping to "make do" with that.  My wife is 8 months pregnant so she's put me on lockdown with the spending and buying of anything really.  I'll check out the outdoors section also.  New to the forum so I'm still trying to find the different discussions.  Thanks for the info.

im in the process of setting up my stag m4clone for 'yotes.  how much $ you got to spare?  what ranges will you be hunting?  a larue stealth, noveske, or bcm should be plenty accurate, but there are cheaper options if you like.  id get a 16 or 18" barrel, 1/8 or 1/7 twist for heavier ammo to cut down wind drift.  for a scope id get a 1-4 or 3-9 depending on range.  i wont be shooting past 500 yds and probably no farther than 350 so im getting a 1-4x.  too much magnification makes it difficult to hit moving targets.

I used a 16" switchblock AAC suppressed AR15 with Nightforce 2.5-10x.  It works really well.

Speaking from experience....Yes by all means you have to hit them..... that is to say if you hit them anywhere they have meat (not a grazing shot), 5.56 will kill them.
I highly recommend a soft-point or hollow-point bullet moving at 3200 fps.

You do need a relatively accurate rifle (surprise,my stock Mini-14 has killed a lot of varmints, too)....but consider your style of hunting a target or varmint model may not be what you want. My preferred weapon is my AR-15,I using a 20" rifle upper, combined with a carbine lower, plus a 6-18x scope.

You dont need to camo yourself or the rifle if youre a mile away!

I wish... I have an abundance of very bold yotes at my place. I also am a good neighbor and don't feel like cracking of some rounds late at night on a regular basis. I have had to shoot them within the security light in my front yard, but would love to make it a more regular activity.

The gun don't really make a hoot, as long as it's accurate, and has some range.

Main thing about preditor hunting is paying attention to the wind, and use camo or a ground blind. Also if use a electronic caller, set it up so it draws attention away from you. I use an old tape recorder and 100ft of speaker wire attached to a vehicle 'PA' speaker. I can set the speaker up 100ft away from me, put in whichever call tape I want, and vary the volume to suit the wind noise.

If it's really windy...try another day. If you do attract a coyote, turn down the volume, and kill him while he's looking around(away from you).

Don't hunt the same area too often. Especialy if you're hunting coyotes and get a kill. Give it a week or two, or you won't see shit! Coyotes are pretty smart, and won't call in if they suspect it might cost them their life! They get extremely suspicious if they have been hunted much.

Oh!! And watch your six!! I've had bob cats get sneaky, and stalk up scary close to me from behind(I don't think they have much sense of smell?). You really don't want to go hand to hand with a preditor!!

All sorts of little nuances to preditor hunting. You will call in hawks, crows, bob cats, coyotes, deer, etc.

Already have a RRA LAR-15 with a 3-9 scope.  I'm located in Virginia, so not a lot of wide open country.  On the land that we have, 300 yards tops, and that may be pushing it.  As for money, we have a baby due in 6 weeks, so it's definitely limited.  I am inexperienced with doing a camo job on my piece.  I've looked at the Outdoors forum and have seen a lot of good pics and ideas.  The trend I'm definitely seeing a lot of is trial and error.

Outside of some general 100-300 shooting practice, you are good to go.  Your rifle is plenty accurate for yotes inside of 300 yards as long as you are and if not, thats what the remaining 29 rounds are for anyway.  If you don't reload, I have heard good things about Black Hills 69g ammo.  Try to find a good used electronic predator call too.  You don't need camo.  I've had no problem with yotes in blue jeans and a carhart coat.

I'll be using a BCM M4g with M3 Aimpont thats sighted in with my XM 193 SHTF ammo. I'd rather not change the zero for a special round as I want all my ARs to be able to eat the same diet. Is 193 adequate?

No sir...I beg to differ. Shot placement IS NOT an issue for me.  THAT is a fact.
