I am looking into doing a pair of builds

I am going to get a pair of STAG lowers, and build one for myself as a M4gery(ish, not positive yet) and, as a gift to my Father, an A1 clone(not exact, but all the important stuff)

Question is this, 1968, Veitnam, the M16 would have been an A1, 20" w/ flash hidder, correct?

I have seen several places selling Colt M16A1 uppers lately, are these what they say they are(new/old stock or takeoffs?) what is the barrel condition on these usually?  since if they are good, all I need is an A1 stock and grip, which I can get from SARCO

+1 for the Retro Forums.

FWIW when I built my step dad his AR in 2005 I used one of the CDNN A1 uppers (built on an RRA "US Property" lower). While he more likely had an M16 or M16E1 (Vietnam 1967-1968, his unit transitioned to the M16 from the M14 half way through his tour), he was definitely happy with the CDNN upper.

CMMG has several uppers that are pretty close to the old A-1 stuff.
