I received and tested a few ProMag, 20 round, AR-15 magazines this week. I know that the consensus is to stay away from the commercial mags, but I have to say I was very pleased. They are steel construction and weigh twice as much as the aluminum, USGI mags, 6.3 oz verse 3.1 oz. Their geometry appears identical to the USGI. They have a plastic follower and I suspect that they would accommodate a GI follower. They locked, fed and functioned without a failure. They would not be my first choice in a combat situation, but for range work, they are just fine. |

I have two ProMag 20s that were given to me. The spring and follower is junk. The follower doesn't push from the center of the stack, hence you have a tipping problem like the old Sanchez mags. You can take a spring and follower for a USGI 20 and make them work very well. I did just that with both of mine. The problem is that there is little value here. While you can make a good range mag, why waste all the effort. With a good spring and follower, I still wouldn't pay more than $10 each for them, if that. There must be a million good USGI mags out there in the U.S. alone. If you keep your eyes open, you can find new or like new USGI mags for $25 or less. Pop and new follower in them and you have a perfect mag. If there was nothing better out there, then I might start messing with the ProMags of the world. There simply isn't a shortage of good mags out there for the public to buy. With the numbers still out there, I doubt there will be anytime soon. |

I have more USGI mags than I could ever use at this point. Still, I always pick up some new mags if I find a bargain. The Brittish mags are outstanding quality. They break Troy's rule. They are a knock-off of the USGI mags except they are made of steel. The black follower is indeed an anti-tilt follower just like the green ones here. If you can find a bargain, pick them up. I found some last year at $12 each new in the paper. Other than the Brittish mags, I would obey Troy's law. USA/Western/Promags/Thermolds/Orlites and others don't offer the quality that I would want or need, not even for the range. When you can buy a real USGI or Brittish mag in perfect condition for $20, why on earth would you waste you time with that other stuff? |
