I have a JP-NC22 rifle (22 lr) with an EXPS-3 sight on it. Today I headed out to the range to do
some IPSC practice. The temperature was around 32F (0C). The sight would not turn on to
my surprise. Yesterday when I cleaned it was no problem. When I got home the rifle was
cold and the sight would not turn on. After around 1h indoor it worked again. The sight
is brand new with the from factory supplied Panasonic CR123A Lithium Battery.

Anyone else has problems with their sight in cold weather? If so, is it the battery or the
sight that sucks?

Both the battery and the sight suck. The sight requires much more power to come on than other sights that utilize more current technology and your battery does not deliver the requisite amperage in the cold. Any sight that will not work reliably in common ambient conditions for your AO is ill suited for the task.

That was incredibly helpful.

OP, did ya try swappin out the battery for a fresh one?

The above interpretation is a little extreme. Navy SEALs and plenty of other SOF units use EOTechs in very extreme conditions.

Further, these specs suggest it should work in temps as low as -40F:

Perhaps the battery was low on power. Indeed, battery life is reduced in cold temps. I wonder, if you turned the optic on indoors prior to going outside, would the optic would work fine?

EOTech/L-3 has great CS, give them a call or email and see what they say.

I'm very disappointed with this sight if it is so unreliable in cold weather. It's 32F or below from Nov to April in Sweden.

I have not tried swapping out the battery. The sight is new. I will get some new batteries tomorrow and test next weekend.
Before I got to the range I tested the sight and it worked fine.

Thanks.

I never use the batteries that come w/an optic, no telling how old/good they are. I always use lithiums for better cold-weather performance.

You need to ask yourself how and why they use them.

im sure its the batteries cause i have owned a exps and there rugged like the aimpoints, 32 degrees should not of had any affect on that eotech. they are used in all harsh weather conditions and have stood up great. i bet if you put in a set of new surefire batteires your not gonna ever see it fail like that again. i stand by eotech like the aimpoints.

Any time batteries might be the problem, they probably are.

Switch them for a new surefire if that doesn't work then worry about the sight.
