Trying to work things out in my head and wanted to run a couple things past y'all for your thoughts.

Two retro type projects I'd like to do, pondering them keeps me awake at night sometimes.

Copy of Air Force GUU-5/P and a 610ish carbine with A1 flash hider rather than moderator on 10.3-inch barrel.

Working all this out in trying to source all the parts I'd need and like to have...

...would I be better off just "starting" with good Colt SP1s?

Seems I'd have most of the nice Colt parts I'd like and not have to scrounge (not a fan of the scrounging). Could sell parts I don't need to help with cost. Seems SP1s are still affirdable. Two downsides that bother me a bit; large front pin, and the part where I'd be "wrecking" good SP1s for the projects.

As these would both be SBRs I'm going to be married to them forever, would like something awesome (like I love the SP1s)

I would not use an SP1. The rifles you want to build are totally different than an SP1, all you would be left with is some small parts. The barrels are totally different and the lowers are slabsides which would be incorrect for what you want to do. Start with nodak lowers and just piece them together. Also, starting with an SP1 would be about $1400 or so depending on the year. There's very few parts you can use from them to make a carbine build. If you just wanted like a 602 or 604 but didn't care if it was totally correct and didn't want to build it I'd say buy an SP1.

SP1's are really not that affordable anymore, and many are parting them out for profits. Someone should start a Colt SP-1 rescue. I am working a deal for one right now.

SP1s are the only original semi Retro! Collect them, don't part them.

If you're not a fan of scrounging then retro is going to be difficult for you. Most of our guns come together one pice at a time and a project may take a year or more.

Maybe buy a Troy gun rebarrel it?

If you plan on building a retro rifle w/ 20", the SP1 is an excellent place to start.  Buy the rifle, sell the lower for $800-$1000, pick up a Nodak lower and M16 bolt carrier, and you are in business.  You will need to install the reducer for front pivot pin, or pick up a USGI upper receiver and sell the SP1 upper.
