I suggest you get some instuction, and see what works best for you. That way you don't start any bad habits.

Well, according to the serrated "gator grip" on my Mega lower, it would suggest that the magwell is the proper hand placement, however the stippled grip on my Magpul freefloat rail covers suggest that on the handguard is the proper placement.

I think my rifle is messing with me.

Excellent suggestion.  

The answer would also vary if you have a verticle fore-grip.  I and many others like them - some people hate them.
