Just wondering if anyone knows how it's actually done by the original assemblers. Surely they don't blow air in the barrel or draw lines on it like I do?

For gas blocks that are held in place by set screws, I made a jig using an old gas block. I cut away the top half so that you could see the gas port and then I made an alignment pin that goes through the gas block and into the port in the barrel. You line these up, tighten the front set screw then put the barrel in a drill press and dimple the barrel for the back set screw. The back set screw is, from what I've seen, aligned with the gas port. After I did all of this, I found out that Bravo company sells a jig.
With low profile clamp ons, I just eyeball it. You actually have to be pretty far off before the rifle won't cycle right. If the clamp on has a rail on it, I level the upper then level the gas block and tighten. |
