I was taking some pictures of my firearms for insurance purposes and I thought I would share pictures of one of my prototypes.

I am not a very good photographer so forgive me.  I need to work on that skill and get a better camera.

I put his together last year when NoDak shipped the new uppers and receivers.   It actually took me a couple of years to put together the upper with waiting on the FSB and having JT help with several things.

It shoots great by the way.

I tend to get lost in all of the nomenclature of all the variants/models/series #'s etc that infest the AR world, but I like the rifle pictured. I always liked the top mounted charging handle part of the original design. And I like the simple uncluttered lines of the receiver. If that gun was available at a LGS, I would buy one right now.

How thin is that barrel?  Twist rate?  Chrome lined?  What does that rifle weigh unloaded?

The barrel is .570, which is as thin as I wanted to make it.  I think a normal A1 barrel is about .585 if I remember correctly.  The originals had thinner barrels than that but I didn't want to go that much.

I used a NOS Colt chrome lined 1/12 twist barrel for it.

It is 6.4 lbs unloaded.  Very lightweight.

I was surprised at how well it shot..

The front sight base is almost impossible to find nowadays.  As was discussed in another thread there was one run of them made a couple of years ago and either you got one or you didn't.

The bipod adapter and the flash hider were fabricated and I don't think anybody else is making them anymore.  I had a dozen flash hiders made and sold the ones I didn't need very quickly on the EE.

The furniture was done by John Thomas.  He still does that kind of work.

The BCG is an original 601.

I have a modern gas tube and buffer components.  I have earlier gas tubes and Edgewater buffers but they are in my other two prototypes, not in this particular one.

The upper and lower was from NoDak Spud and they will most likely do other production runs if the demand is there.

Several people on this forum have made these rifles (some have done a much better job than I have) but I doubt you will ever find one in a gun store or gun show.

Putting one together is a labor of love and will take you a long time and it will be more expensive than you imagine.

Hey, who made that muzzle device?

Your proto turned out primo. An inspiration to many of us.

I had a friend do a run of them and I sold about 10 of them on the EE.  I may be wrong but I am thinking that you bought one.

You're not wrong. It is still waiting for me to send the barrel off with the FSB etc for finishing. Again, Nice proto.

With all the different AR15 companies out there, I am surprised not one has thought about offering by special order AR15 "Legacy" Rifles.

I love proto builds, they are a labor of love......lot's of labor, lots of money, lots of love. They aren't an investment build that's for sure. They are so gorgeous, I don't even think I'd shoot mine more than once (If I had one) which I don't. I'd love to see a real proto in person, I've seen pictures of R. Knight's collection but seeing them in person would be so much better.

You better get off you butt and git er done.  You may wake up one day and find out that Braceman ran off with a stripper and is no longer finishing FSBs and JT has decided to be a Buddhist Monk and is no longer working on retro barrels and the boys at NoDak Spud turned their machine shop into making Peace necklaces because it is more profitable then who are you going to get to help you finish it?

There are three or four builds waiting for some custom work right now, or an SBR.

Congrats on the build again, and more pics!

I seem to recall one of my first ARs had a place on the grip for a swivel like that, but no swivel. I was just thinking about it the other day, wundering if a grip swivel like that would be good for pistols.
Love your weapon by the way.

Well done sir!  One day I'll finish mine, need to find someone to wrap stocks
In that fiberglass weave.... Or get off my butt and do it myself.
