Perhaps one for the true 5.56 connoisseurs - I spied 11 boxes of 5.56mm (62) FMJ marked M855 Penetrator at a gun shop and scarfed 'em up.  The box has an Olin trademark and the casings are stamped either 04 or 06 with a NATO cross and WCC, and the projectiles are green tipped.

So far no questions, just expensive ($8.95/20) M855, right?  But the boxes are all marked Q3269 where I've elsewhere seen Q3131.  I've never heard of this before. So what's different about Q3269?

ETA - corrected number from 3296 to 3269

The Q3269 is Olin/WCC-made M855-spec ammo. The bullets are 62gr. SS109 projectiles with the steel penetrator. Olin most likely has a secondary-source contract with the govt. to help relieve some of the pressure off of Lake City ammo plant.

What little of it that has hit the market is most likely from lots that didn't pass some sort of QC check...think along the lines of the Federal/Lake City XM855PD & XM855CS.

I picked up a case from ammoman.com last month when he had it.

I haven't shot any of it yet, but it looks pretty decent. I only had to reject about 8 - 10 rounds that were unusable due to severely dented/mashed cases and one round that had a bullet seated too deeply.
