I went shooting today and had some time to clean my AR at the range. I prayed it down with CLP, used a tooth brush to scrub a little, then wiped the rifle down with a towel. I used a couple of .40 patches to clean out the chamber and the area behind it (I forgot the name of it, the gear looking part that the bolt locks into). I sprayed some CLP down the bore (it sizzled a little bit, so I waited 5 minutes, I hope I didn't screw anything up), then I ran my bore snake thru it 3 times. My questions are: 1) Is this an alright method of cleaning the rifle? My plan was to just do this after shooting, then every 2,000 rounds do a very thorough cleaning and use a stronger solvent plus a brush for the bore. Sound good? 2) How do you guys clean out that gear looking area right behind the chamber? After I was done I saw some crap in there, maybe a shotgun sized patch would work? 3) What type of towel should I use? Do Microfiber towels work well? I noticed that the towels I used left a lot of lint on the rifle, since the entire rifle has CLP on it the lint is sticking, and I am worried that lint sticking to places like the bolt might screw something up. Opinions? Thanks a lot! |

Get the correct cleaning supplies to clean your weapon. What you mention above sounds fine as a start, but you are talking about wiping down the outside, and you neglect to do anything to the bolt & BC, which is obviously much more important. Read the manual, do what it says for cleaning. |

that grear looking thingie, you would use a chamber brush to clean it and the chamber at once. I use Q-tips after the brush to soak up the loose crap. I am a lot more anal with my cleaning than that. I break it down 100% every time, unless it was just 3 to 10 rounds. What your doing will work, but I like to clean a rifle almost as much as shooting. hell i even pull the handguards everytime. my ar are cleaned with fp-10 most of the time. for some deep loving i use something with a little more kick for the copper. |
Just a side note, and I'm not sure if it applies to all military units, but they aren't letting us use Q-tips anymore on our M-16's because they can leave fibers behind or fall off and they settle into places and get burnt and create more fouling... hinking.gif |
