I’m using a 602 BCG for my 604 build and I have a couple of questions about the parts used on it.
Did the 602 BCG use the original machined retainer pin or does it use the current wire pin? Also, is the cam pin supposed to be chrome or blued/parked? I’ve seen pictures of them with both, but I wasn’t sure if it was a date of manufacture thing or a case of the AF using whatever parts are on hand to rebuild one. |

Early early 604 (1964), Early 604 (1965-1966) or Late 604 (round forge)?
IIRC, the chrome BCG would probably be appropriate only thru 1965 or maybe a litle afterwards...I believe they started parking them pretty quickly afterwards. To add confusion, there are some parked carriers with chrome keys out there too. I'd say a rule of thumb would be early early 604-all chrome carrier with machined pin and squared gas key, "early" 604 - transitional parked/chrome with machined pin, and "late" 604 (1967-up, round forge) would probably be all parked, not sure about the retainer pin though. All the original chrome BCGs I've ever seen photos of had blued/parked cam pins, but I'll let someone more knowledgable weigh in on that. ETA: I'm working on an "early" 604 myself...square forge upper without indent below ejection port, M VP barrel, transitional chrome/parked BCG (although I also have a chrome square key BCG I may swap in), and no-drainhole HGs. I figure mine fits perfectly into a 1965 timeframe. |

That's is exactly what I’m building (Square forge upper w/o indent), I think 1965 is what I’m aiming for, the hard part will be finding the correct FSB since I’ll probably use a chrome bore and chamber barrel. From what I can find, they were still using the 602 carriers until Mid ’65, so the transitional one would fit in as well. |

What I would be interested in knowing is when the transition from the full round gas key, to the 3/4 gas key took place during the 602 production. Would the early 602 still use the full round gas key? I believe the change was made with the introduction of the 602 model, and the full round was only on the 601. I could be mistaken though |

When I was dealing with member Leid,he told me that he and Ekie hashed it out and the answer was a definite "Colt NEVER made a chrome cam pin" If you see one that appears chrome,,it's actually a very very worn pin.Or a commercial aftermarket piece. That’s probably what I saw in some of the pictures. Thanks for the help y’all! Now all I need to do is find a machined retainer pin…... |

Most use the KNS machined retaining pin. As for square forge 604's or 604's in general most anything goes on the BCG. Earlier usually don't have FA serrations but many later do. Only in retroland have I even seen a complete politically correct 604. The originals I've seen weren't very consistent. BCG's are usually a mix of chrome and parkerized parts. Neighbor growing up was a guard in the AF in the early 70's and he confirms a mix of parts even in the new weapons. Seems the AF got hold of the three prongs when ditched by the ground pounders also. As stated, no chrome cam pins on USGI M-16's. |
