I know early 602s still had triangle charging handles and dimpled selectors. Did any early 602s have the 601 style bolt catch and mag button?
My 601 has an early 604 upper and CMP C barrel, and would be closer to a 602 than a 601. I actually like real mottled black furniture than my faux painted Green furniture. I have a great mottled stock and pistol grip, and I have no drain mottled handguards under my faux-green. I may strip them, and paint my later handguards. |

As best we can tell, yes, the early 602 had whatever was still in the parts bin from the 601 run.
This I may strip them, and paint my later handguards. That's what I did. I did use a repaired c-stock which I kinda regret but it needed painting so why not faux green. |
| AHHHHHH! That's what I was hoping for! I really think I my 602 my 601! Maybe I will have a set of faux green to sell. My son is now leaning towards an A2 or heavy barrel, so I might as well use the mottled black furniture for something since i can't afford a third build. |

Regarding the mag button––if you mean the horizontal lines version, that appears to have disappeared relatively early in the 601 production run. The transition to "many circles" would have come well before the 602 run. When I was shopping for a Model 01, I was surprised to see how few actually wore the horizontal lines. I'd have to go back through my notes, but I'm not sure they made it through half the run. It's true that if, somehow, an old leftover horizontal lines button was found in the factory during the 02 production, it probably would have been used, but I figure they'd have been long gone by then. |
| Yup, during weapons inspections I've ran across 602 lowers that were converted to A2 specs but still had the 601 style bolt catch release. As far as the horizontal line magazine release buttons, of all the 601 lowers I have seen, I have never seen a horizontal line mag catch button. The many circle buttons are pretty common on these old lowers so I have no problem with a 601 clone with this style mag release button. Now I know he theory of all these parts being replaced sound like it would make sense with upgrading to the latest and greatest parts but the reality is this is seldom if ever done. If the old style part has nothing more than cosmetic changes like a horizontal mag catch button for example, it's not going to happen first because the original part is still serviceable and there is no reason to DRMO a part like that....to say nothing of the paperwork and documentation we have to do for an unnecessary process like this. Granted this is through the eyes of a modern day CATM troop but I can't help but think the CATM troops back then would have looked at it the same way. |
