I need some help from the experts. I've had this upper sitting around for awhile. I got it in a trade and don't know much about it. It's in good shape except for some vise jaw marks. I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me who made it, and what it's worth. There's no markings on it. I can put up more pictures if needed. Just incase anyone is interested in it, i would like to trade it for a 5.56 bcg. Thanks for any help!

Rearsennalled late 604 upper. If one were to strip it and refinish it properly I think the vise marks could be ameliorated.

Is that paint drips? Was it painted?

With my ocd id strip it back down to annodizing and if thats messed up perhaps get it annodized or gun kote in some sort of gray...

Yeah, it has been painted. I know I could fix the vise marks if I strip it down and polish it, but is it worth the time? Especially with the cost of annodizing it? That's part of why I was hoping to find out its value and maker.

It's a Colt.  Value is a tough thing right now.  Retro hasn't jumped like everything else do to limited market.  Retro mags and BCG's are a little different.  A bunch of those very similar just sold on GB for $80ea. and were listed for at least a month.   If I'd have bought for re-sale I'd probably asked $120 shipped and jumped on first $115.  That's 25-30%.  Port door is around $35 and sight assembly is $20 minimum.  Door would sell quick sight may not. Assembled with the refinish and vise marks I'm gonna say $125  max but with frenzy ask more and come down.  It's hard to go uo once price is set.  Most in retroland don't want refinished,  they want original finish.

Can't see any proof marks, probably since the paint is so thick.  They may be visible once it's stripped.

I don't think there are any maker marks. The paint isn't very thick. Thanks for the info. I read up on the 604 and I think your right on

We're not talking about forge marks - early Colt stuff didn't have them. VAAR was talking about proof marks, which are just behind the barrel, RH side, in the little RH notch just above and forward to the ejection port. They are often very faint and hard to see under normal circumstances, with the rearsenal they are invisible. Strip it you'll likely find them. I have seen a lot of reworked upprs that look fine as is, and I usually recommend leaving them alone, but it's clear to me that the paint is pretty thick and poorly done.  I would strip it and see what it looks like. Dings may be able to be easily hidden - they don't look as deep as the one John Thomas just redid. (recent thread you should read.) Good luck!

I had no idea it could have proof marks. That's why I figured I'd ask the guys that know. I don't know much about the retro stuff. I'm still going to try and trade it off for a bcg but if I can't get rid of it I'll strip I'd down and refinish it. Then I'll have to keep it though! Would lightly sandblasting the paint off be a bad idea? Thanks again for all the info!

I did find a proof mark

Looks like a square with a circle of half moon in the center
Also a close up of the jaw marks. Should be fun getting those polished out

Think of them as exclamation marks...
