What the heck is the difference between the following:

A2 upper
A3 upper
A3 upper with gas block sight base
any other subtle, but important differences in upper kits?

Wish the various sites would show pics of what is what for those of us who are new to the AR and want to build rather than buy.

At one time I wished they had a diagram like that too. It can be very confusing when you first start out learning about AR's. A2's have the carry handle and A3's are the flat top model.

Thanks so far, what about the gas blocks/front sight options??

Some say picatinny gas block, some say forged front sight, etc.

Brandon's last picture shows the picatinny gas block.  Standard 'triangle" front sight bases come either cast or forged.

and to further confuse you, some manufacturers call a flat top an A4.
