I had a guy tell me the trigger group on the original AR15/M16 was different than the current trigger group in more ways than burst fire/full auto. I was under the belief the trigger group has not changed. Could someone clarify please??

Auto, burst and semi FCGs all have parts (or lack parts) that are unique to them.
So there are three basic types.
Do a search under Google Images and you can see the different assemblies for yourself.
