How do you tell a bolt has been proofd and MPed (without marking)

I got a few Stag arms bolts but I am not sure they are proofed as they are very clean.

MP testing doesn't leave any visable signs that I can see. I have MPed and non-MPed bolts, and without the markings, I can't tell the difference.

Most bolt and other parts are not individually MP tested or proofed.  That would take way too long and would be impossibly expensive.  They do this in batches, taking samples to make sure quality maintained through the maufacturing process.

You can pay extra, as I think you are implying, to have your new bolt MP tested.  Usually these bolts are electro-penciled "MP'd", but that is all there might be and there may be no physical proof that it was in fact MP tested.

To a degree, this is like paying extra for "hand select."  You'll never know if it was really done, so thet best thing you can do is go with a trusted dealer.

Homeinvader, Colt shot peens, MPIs and proof tests all of their bolts, and they are not impossibly expensive.

yes, that is my question. I was told the bolts that I purchased were MPed and proofed.

That's why I am wondering, if it has been subjected to a proof round, why is it so spotlessly clean?

That's why Colt bolts are 2-3 times more expensive than others.  Stag bolts are about $50, LMT bolts are about $70, Colts are about $150.
