The free float handguard I purchased did not come with any adapter to close the opening in the front end.  On free float handguards, what do you use on the front end of the handguard?  Or, do you just leave the front end open?

It depends on what you bought. If its an unventalated tube then it will likely not have a plug for the front. It its a railed handguard with lots of vents like Yankee Hill then they have a plug you can buy ($8) that screws into the front. The barrel heat needs to go somewhere.
