I just bought a Smith USCG/USN style muzzle break for my AR15 and it came with a jam nut .  I put both pieces on the barrel and in order for the break to function properly I can't thread it completely.  When I tighten the jam nut to the break the wrench lands don't line up.  Is this a big deal or should I remove the jam nut and add a peel or crush washer instead.  Or put a peel washer behind the jam nut.  Thanks.

Have you tried putting the nut on from the other side?  Flip the nut over.  That should make it line up differently. The nut goes tight to the break for indexing not tight to the barrel. It's just the nature of the beast. I had to have a break indexed because I didn't want a washer. After mine has been on and off a few times it is now over indexed. I will probably end up using a crusher washer.

Hmmm...  Never thought of flipping the nut over, I'll try it thanks.  I know the break won't be tight to the barrel though.

you can't expect the flats of the break and nut to line up.

Make it all indexed and snug and run it. Don't let the hyper attention to unimportant detail slow you down, you have shooting to do!

Thanks guys, just my OCD showing a little, LOL.  Flipping the nut around worked though

Leave the jam nut off and use a crush washer.  You will get proper clocking.

Don't have an extra right now, but what will that do that the jam nut wont?
