Hey guys! I'm new to the world of AR's and new to AR15.com but with what I've read so far and with help from some friends I've been ordering parts and I'm almost ready to build my first AR. As of yet I haven't decided on an upper. I've got a red dot scope and mount that I am planning on using already but it isn't the cool aimpoint with some fancy ARMS mount....that will come later i'm sure! I was wondering if some one could tell me how high up from a flat top rail should my scope sit in order to see through or above the front sight? From the setups I've seen here it looks like your optics should sit slightly above your front sight so that you can use either your optics or iron sights without having to remove your scope...is that correct? Thanks in advance guys! |

Using a magnified scope, you would hardly even see the front sight post as the magnification focuses your eyes on your target and you kind of just surpass the front sight base. You'll proably just have a very light haze at the bottom of your field of view if you mount it a little low. As for using irons and a scope without dismounting the scope, you're on your own as that's a little hard to do without a high see through riser. |

Most of the guys here use an absolute co-witness or lower third co-witness (see link below for the picture). The lower third co-witness will place your dot above the iron sight and have a better field of view. With Aimpoint type dot sights you will either get a mount that is absolute or lower third co-witness. Some mounts have shims to raise the optic for a lower third co-witness. When an EOTech dot sight is mounted on the rail without a mount it will have an absolute co-witness but if a mount is used, it will have a lower third co-witness.
