I am working with a plater for work and we are going to do some EN boron nitride plating to help lubricate tooling. It is the same plating that a few companies put on rifle bolts so I asked the guy about it and he said he'd do a couple for me for free. Just gotta tell him how it works for me. I need to remove the parkerized finish that is currently on it... Would you guys recommend a chemical bath or blasting it? Also, should a .001" thick plating affect the function at all?
I'm not sure how thick the parkerizing is and I can measure it before and after I remove it to find out for sure... Just wondering what your guys thoughts are.

I would blast it to get the parkerizing off..as too tolerances Im not sure but 1000th of an inch doesnt seem much considering the gas rings even compressed have a bigger diameter than the bolt in it moves freely so I think that thickness wont affect bolt function once its done.

We use black diamond blasting media. Will that leave an appropriate finish without follow-up polishing?

Any place you could get bolts in the white?

Maybe CMT or someone would sell you a couple to try it on??

I was thinking that perhaps I could do this as a business venture so maybe its not a bad idea to do 3 of them. 1 chemically removed, 1 sand blasted, and 1 fresh.
I think there is enough of a market to make me a few extra bucks on the side.

try to find HP/MP tested shotpeend bolts and extractors and offer those at a good price and theyll fly out the door.

Do you guys think there are enough people who would pay to have their current bolt stripped and plated?

If the right people endorsed it, and it actually worked, yeah.

You'll want to do some research into how this might affect the heat treating in any way. Embrittling a bolt would be bad juju.

also a major factor would be the cost.

I've gotta see what kind of deal my guy will throw me but I think it will be relatively low. I will have to look at the details again but I think the plating process temp is well below the point at which the grain structure of the steel will change.
