Recently purchased a new rifle and wanted to update the bolt. It came with the blue bumper and 3 coil spring. I oreded from SAW sales along time ago their Bolt upgrade. It came with a black bumper that looks just a ltttle bigger and a greenish 4 coil spring. This is the kit I want to install for better reliability correct? |

Sounds like it. The SOPMOD upgrade is a black bumper. Do you know what the source is for the black bumper? In any case, put them into the bolt and see if it runs well. If it works, you were successful. You should purchase back-ups too (one is none, two is one). Bravo Company sells a good bolt upgrade kit that includes an ejector spring. I am not necessarily pimping BCM, but I was just on their website yesterday in preparation for a buy. |
The source for the black bumper was SAW sales. They are a big Colt Distributor. |
| It sounds like the correct upgrade. I can't be sure without actually having the part in hand. Then again, I probably couldn't tell even if I had the part in hand. If it's black and looks bigger, it's probably a go. I can take a look at the insert in an M4A1 and see if there is anything else to help you out, if you want. |

If I could chime in... the "D-Fender" companies like Brownells sell works wonders in improving the extractor function and prevents "extractor bounce". Brownells also sells Wolff "extra power" springs which helps as well... especially in conjunction with the D-Fender. Another GREAT addition I have on all my AR's is the McFarlane 1-piece gas rings. Although it's rare, if your rings all line up and create a gap, the gas escapes and doesn't put enough pressure into the bolt to push it back and cycle reliably... worse so in shorter barrels like M4 and carbines. The McFarlane ring prevents that. Of course, always remember to keep your rifle clean and propperly lubed. |

Just saw this pop up and had to jump back into this. Gas ring alignment is a myth. The purpose for the gas rings is to provide forward pressure to the bolt to delay unlocking. The M4 will work with all the gaps lined up. In fact it will work with only one gas ring in the weapon. Just a common myth that pops up its ugly head up every now and then. Amen to the lube. A properly lubed AR will run for thousands of rounds without cleaning. |
