When chrome lining is applied to a barrel, how much does it affect its internal dimensions?  Does the chome lining decrease the bore and chamber diameter or are barrels destined for chroming cut larger to begin with?

Yes to both.  It does decrease the internal space so barrels need to be cut taking that into account.

Just as I suspected.  How thick is the typical chrome lining?

I'm trying to convince a friend to use a chrome lined barrel on his SHTF  rifle building project.  He maintains that such a thing is unnecessary here in New Mexico.

I for one won't question your friend wisdom but he should consider the following:

1) Chrome has a lower coefficient of friction than the bare steel chambers.  This aids in reliable extraction.

2) Chrome chambers are far less likely to get scratched from the abrasive sand than a bare steel chamber.  Scratches in the chamber reduce reliablity (the expanded brass flows into it and makes it harder to extract.

3) Funny how the most reliable rifles at places like Gunsite are Colts & Bushmasters - the rifles most likely to have chromed chambers & bored and to be properly chambered (the same as an M16).

Roughly .002" IIRC

The chrome lining is extremely thin - like 1/10 the thickness of a sheet of paper. It's more like a "coating," really. And I wouldn't even bother buying an AR without it, unless it was purely for match shooting.

My sentiments, exactly.  Thank you for the information, gentlemen.

IME, the bore is etched with acid prior to chroming. that is the extra size needed.
