Very new to this conversion kit. Sorry if this question is a dupe.

Does this system use the AR's gas tube to function, or is it blow-back?

If it is blow-back, will the .22LR round soil the gas tube if it is left in place?

Thanks for your help

Blow back only.
I think cloging the gas tube is a dirty rumor (Like the pun). Even if it does clog it spend $8 for a new one.

As posted it is blowback.  The easiest thing to do regarding this is use decent ammo, and blow the gas tube out with a few 556 rounds every so often, or after shooting the 22LR.  You will be so busy having fun with the 22LR, that you will soon not worry about the gas tube.

The manual for the M261 calls for firing one or two 30 round mags of 5.56 after every session of 1000 or so .22 rounds specifically to clean out the gas tube.  .22 ammo is significantly dirtier than most center fire ammo, though it seems to be cleaner than 5.56mm blanks.

My M261 manual says to clean out the gas system with 5.56 after firing 400 rounds of .22 TRACER ammo. No warning about normal .22 ammo at all.

Also, when you do blow it out, you don't need a full mag of 5.56 to do it. When you fire the first shot, does it eject and feed and chamber the second round normally? Congratulations, your gas system is clean. Ain't gonna get no cleaner. If it doesn't, repeat as necessary until it does. I've never fired more than 2 shots of 5.56 to ensure that my gas system is still working.

I've gone as much as 800 rounds between blowouts, now working on going to 1000.

Here's what it says on page 2.6 of TM 9-6920-363-12&P:

CAUTION
Continuous firing (400-1000 rounds per weapon) of M861 cal.22 rimfire tracer ammo will result in lead particles fouling the M16A1 rifle gas system. This will cause the weapon not to fire in either semiautomatic or automatic mode. However, firing regular M193 5.56-mm ball ammo will clear the gas system. You should therefore do the following to prevent permanent blockage of the gas system and to clear the rifle of fouling:
–At the end of each training session .(typically 400-1000 rounds per weapon), remove the rimfire adapter and reinstall the bolt carrier. Fire a 20/30 round magazine of 5.56-mm M193 ball ammo in the automatic mode in short bursts of 4 to 5 rounds.
–If the rifle won’t fire in either semi or automatic mode, manually recharge and fire the weapon (using 5.56-mm ball ammo) for up to 10 rounds. Then fire an entire magazine as described above. This will clean the gas system so you can resume subcaliber firing. Do not use western T-22 cal .22 ammunition in the rimfire adapters.
Did you see something in a different manual, or in a different part of this one?  Or are we saying the same thing in different ways?
