I'm looking to buy an optic for my flat top M4.  I've mainly been looking at Trijicon.  I was hoping someone could tell me the main differences between the TA01 and the TA31RCO-A4.  The advertised pictures and pricing are quite different, but looking at listed specs, I cannot tell a difference between them.  Hopefully you guys can shed some light on this for me, thanks!

So The TA01 is made to be mounted on a carry handle?  Is there any way to mount it to a flat top?  The specs for the TA01 from Budsgunshop.com are as follows:

Magnification  4x
Objective 32mm
Field of View 36.8ft @ 100 meters
Eye Relief 1.5"
Tube Diameter N/A
Length 5.8"
Weight 9.9 oz
Finish Matte
Reticle Dual Illumination (Fiber Optic/Day -Tritium/Night)
Adj Size N/A

It says the exact same thing for the TA31RCO-A4 except the weight, which is 15.1 oz.  Both say dual illumination, etc.

Which is the best way for me to go?

Did you even go to trijicons sight???
TA01  http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=139&back_row=4&categoryID=3

TA31RCO-A4 http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=476&back_row=4&categoryID=3

The only thing in common is the MFG, the magnification, and the general design.
The reticle, illumination, and mounts they come with are all different.

I did go to their site, but their information and several of their vendors information contradicted each other.   That's why I came here for clarification.  So, apparently the TA31 series is the way for me to go?

I would just rely on the Trijicon site.  And the major differences are the reticle, the dual illumination, and the BAC.

Now, the choice would be:  TA31F, TA31F-G or TA31RCO, at least for me, it would be...

Thanks.  I really like the RCO myself.  I'm not sure if it's the vendor's error or what, but they have the TA31F picture under the RCO description.  This has added to the confusion.  Is $1178 a good or typical price for the RCO?

$1178 would be the best price I've seen for the RCO-M4, below Botach's $1200.

Since I also want the Larue LT100 QD mount, I'm inclined to purchase the RCO-M4 w/ LT100 from Larue ($1292.50).  The LT100 is $125 by itself.

There are several threads which speak highly of the Green Chevron (TA31F-G).  You might consider that option.  Also, there are many threads which describe the negative aspects of the short eye relief of the TA31.

I'm a fan of the Ta-31 series, and I prefer the TA-31F or RCO for the illuminated chevron reticle.

Some will say the 3x ACOGS (?TA-11?) are better because of their increased eye relief spec, but they sacrifice some of the field of view of the TA-31 4x series.

I run the LaRue RCO mount without a BUIS and run the scope pretty far back on the flat top, bacause I'm not a "nose to chaging handle" (NTCH) shooter. I typically have a distance of about two fingers width between the tip of my nose and the back of the charging handle when I am shooting.

FWIW, my buddy has a plain TA-31 with the unlit black crosshair reticle, and after trying my TA-31F and TA-31RCO, he wants to sell his and get one with the daytime illuminated reticle.

docmcb:  Which do you prefer?  The TA-31F or the TA-31RCO?  Also, which RCO do you have?

I have both, the TA31RCO just has horizontal graduations that could be used to call in artillary or mortar fire, not really useful for you or me.

The TA-31F is your best value, but if you can pick up the RCO used or for a creaming deal, go for it.
