| Walking through a gun show today I could not resist picking up some Wolf 62 gr. 5.56 ammo. I have seen mixed reviews of that brand, but the price was so low that I could not resist. Upon unpacking at home, however, I discovered that the rounds exhibit inconsistent bullet seating depth. One does not have to look hard to notice that: comparing a few rounds side-by-side makes it immediately apparent thanks to the bullet cannelure that serves as an easy reference point. Moreover, this variation – up to 1/16” – is quite pronounced among all of the 200 rounds I bought. Is what I am observing a typical situation with Wolf, or did I just get a bad lot? I am wondering if it is even safe to shoot this ammo . . . . |

I don't know about short term safety with 200rds, but I made a serious mess of my bolt/boltcarrier in my AR. The extractor spring broke. The inside of the bolt was covered with the residue from the lacquer. I'm going to a mix of Q3131A and reloaded ammo, which is in my very humble opinion better than Wolf. I would defer judgement to Tatjana or someone with a little more experience than myself, if I were you though. TS |

Take it back to the seller, or do not shoot it. I've found the OAL of their bullets will vary, but the OAL of the fixed cartridge will not (Definitely not by 1/16"). Unless one buys ammo from a known dealer, or reliable vendor, gun show ammo can be a real crapshoot (Pun intended). Meplat- |

Destroyer- By 1/16 of an inch? Who did you get it from? 1/10" is the most I've seen in the stuff I have. Have you chronographed any of it? I'd be interested to see what kind of variations one is getting shot to shot, and if one can predict what the velocity change will be based on OAL. Meplat- |

Quoted: Colinjay- And you shoot ONLY the most expensive ammo in your AR-15? Feeling a bit eletist, are we? Christ, statements like yours remind me of the guys who turn their noses up at people who shoot trap with anything other than a Perazzi. Meplat- notice that i said i like cheap stuff... i buy ammo in bulk and wait to find excellent prices, like when xm193 was $150 per K i would much rather shoot more expensive ammo less frequently than shoot cheap and imporperly seated ammo (increasing my risk to exposure to ammo related catastrophic malfunctions). i am not ammo elitist, i think paying more than $200 for 1000 rounds is rediculous, although im sure some people do just that... however, i will not shoulder a gun with ammo in it that could jeapordize my safety. is a 50$ per 1000 round difference worth ruining a gun from overpressure? the vision in one eye? the use of a hand? seriously. for the price, shortcuts have to be made, and i am not willing to suffer the consequences of those shortcuts... point blank. shortcuts in the Lake Cities XM193 such as unpolished brass and inconsistent case mouth sealant i can handle, along with occasional handling dings. improper seating depth is inexcusable and dangerous!!! |

Colinjay- Then why not give the man a constructive answer, rather than something comparing his ammo to a live grenade? Your post responding to my criticisim was well thought out. In my opinion,it should have been your first response. People come here for answers, opinions and information, not exaggerations and overstatements. Meplat- |

Meplat- im sorry if my first response came across snide... im am a bit tired of the anti-wolf backlash that has seemingly taken over this board with thread titles ranging from "who loves wolf?" to "cheap ammo means more more chips and porn". my reccomendation stands. buy substandard ammo because it is "cheap" and you get what you pay for. (mangled guns or limbs) that simple reason is why anyone with a healthy respect for their guns and themselves should stay faaar away from any ammo that is inconsitently seated. |

Meplat...HAHAHAHA i take it you shoot ATA registered targets regularly. my dad has 4 to 6 perazzi's depending on when you talk to him. i think he owns them just to be one of the cool guys because almost all his prize money and all the plaques, ducks, china and other tacky ATA prizes that litter his house were won with a 10yr old beretta A303 or a 50yr old pigeon grade Model 12. not to hi-jack the thread.... i shoot Wolf almost exclusively in my chrome chamber/bore weapons. i re-check zeros at the begining and end of range sessions with my serious ammo and run my drill with wolf. i find it save me a LOT of money. more than enough to keep keep spare parts on hand. |
| I got my ammo from sportsmansguide. I have not chronographed it. I took a closer look tonight at it. I lined up 20 rounds in a straight line they were all pretty close to the same height. the crimp on the bullet it self is off I guess some are right at the neck and some are a little higher up. I will e-mail wolf and see what the hell is going on over their. The ammo still shots fine. I think once I get my scope back from nikon I should be able to shot 1in groups at 100y no problem. That is about all I expect to get with these rounds. |
| yeah i know what you mean Meplat. thats why i quit shooting trap. i shot it weekly as a kid but most of those guys are dicks. we switched over to sporting clays in the 80s and then it got over run with yuppies too. first time i saw a golf cart at the game farm i was like "WTF, if you cant carry your gun you need to stay home" now i dont even go anymore because the game farms are over run with the golf cart/lincoln navigator crowd. i guess us black rifle guys are simpler men [:D] |
